Gravitational waves detected

He said the detection was one of the most important developments in science since the discovery of the Higgs particle, and on a par with the determination of the structure of DNA.

"It is the first ever direct detection of gravitational waves; it's the first ever direct detection of black holes and it is a confirmation of General Relativity because the property of these black holes agrees exactly with what Einstein predicted almost exactly 100 years ago."

A groundbreaking amazing thing has happened that I don't remotely understand!

Phil Plait usually does a good job of helping me understand things like this. I haven't had a chance to read the full article myself but it'll be worth a read.

As the famous native of Oldham seems to have been strangely quiet so far let's see what good old Neil De Grasse Tyson's take on it is.
Take it away Prof

Gravitational waves – one of the last unproven predictions of Einstein’s theory of general relativity. In his view of the universe, space and time are fluid things that depend on an observer’s frame of reference. For example, time passes just a (very) little bit more slowly for those who work on the ground floor of an office building as compared to their peers on the 101st floor. Why? They’re deeper in Earth’s gravitational pull.

So this is why, being on the Earths surface,  I find my work hours dragging so slowly

“Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. That's relativity.”

I readily admit the only reason I looked on the Independent site is because they are in the new for going digital only but check the link out for a really good short explanation of gravitational waves that even 5 year olds get.
