Chances of 16:9 for Portugal 2004?

Ha Ha! And after all the hype by Currys, Dixons and Co. on their Widescreen world cup packages:-
" See more of the match this summer-with Widescreen."!!!!!!

Personally I couldnt care less whether it`s widescreen or not as long as I see the games, and as a scroungy student I`m planning on watching every one!

So, they won`t get a feed in 16:9 because the UK is the only country that would benefit, but they also won`t get a PAL feed, surely the excuse on that one couldn`t be because the UK is the only country that would benefit, I would love to see what the official excuse is maybe "Only the biggest market will get a crap picture, everyone else willbe okay"

Well it boils down to "No 16:9 and not a decent normal image for you Europeans"

Considering they are using video cameras, I guess its inevitable that it will be either NTSC or PAL, but not both. Maybe there are more countries involved using NTSC than PAL, and there will definitely be more using 4:3 than 16:9.

I`m a bit sad so added them up -

18 definately PAL (Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Cameroon, China, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Nigeria, Paraguay, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, UK and Uraguy)

8 I think are PAL (Senegal, Slovenia, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Croatia, Russia and Tunisia)

6 NTSC (Costa Rica, Equador, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, USA)

And 1 that uses a completly different format to the whole world (France)

So 4 times as many countries use PAL as NTSC, oh well I suppose it`s because the hosts use NTSC (Japan + S Korea), but still .....

What a total f**k up, the Japanese world leaders in technology and they can`t even show a f**cking football match in WIDESCREEN. The mind boggles, what a missed opportunity!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I said countries I mean`t it in a population sense rather than a counting up sense, but I guess even then PAL probably has the edge as you say.

Probably too late to change the video format of S. Korea who no doubt already have installed the cameras.

the footy is widescreen on ITV AND BBC on terrestrial channels, but on Sky digital ITV is boxed for some reason or other.

So unfortunately its the bog standard quality of terrestrial up here for me, but its better than wathing it with nice red curtains down each side on ITV ???
