RCE Problems

c7ped (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 4th November 2002, 12:40

I recently purchased a "Solderless Upgrade" for my Sony NC600 DVD player. It has been working great until I bought a disk with RCE (region code enhancement).

I emailed the company I bought the hack from and they have said that I can only overcome RCE if I have the latest version of firmware on my player. They issued a full refund to me and recommended that i put my money towards "A cheap remote hackable" player say around £60 or £70.

Can anyone suggest some options for me as to what player to go for??

Cheers

Ask your local Argos if they have the Alba DVD114 in stock - it`s a fine player, costs only £70, and is multi-region (and RCE compatible!) out of the box.

they gave you a refund simply because it didnt play rce ?

didnt they tell you that rce didnt play when you sent the player for upgrade ?

sounds a bit strange ?

They said that they had made a mistake on their website, and it should have said that it would only overcome RCE if I had the very latest version of firmware on my machine. they then refunded the full MOD cost....

That was very nice for the company concerned. it`s my experience that most NC600 weren`t RCE compatible, regardless of the firmware version. There would have been 2 options to rectify this:-

1) provide another chip for RCE switching
2) provide a firmware replacement

Most decent mod companies should have been able to offer one or the other. Who was it as a matter of interest?

I guess from the term "Solderless Upgrade" it was dvd[no censorship}chips.co.uk

Yes it was dvdch1ps .co.uk

Where could I get a Firmware upgrade from??? Would it be worth trying cause I really like my player and dont really want to have to change it??

Cheers lads

you will have to do some very tricky desoldering and soldering to change the firmware and I wouldnt bother with the rce add on chip , that`s okay for a cheap fix for a cheap player but not for yours , you want something better than that.

You were correctly advised to buy a cheap player like the £65 superdrug one as the mod you require will be expensive.

If you really want rce on your player then you need a full mod available from www.techtronics.com
