Page 1 of Possible damage or region lock?
Hack Help Forum
Just wondering if anyone knows of any possible damage I may cause to my dvd player if i regularly switch its region settings? I dont want the dvd player to lock on any one region, i heard that can happen! It is a Philips DFR 1600. The system will not allow me to select multi regions, just one region at a time and I just want to know if I can somehow keep it at multi region or simply select whatever region I want as often as I want? Thanks
People keep asking questions like this (including me) and nobody seems to have a definitive answer. It is true that some machines will only allow a maxumim of 25 changes before locking to a region but whether this applies to your (or my Phillips 733) I have not idea.
The question becomes more important if a disc has this newish RCE type of coding which can be got round by setting your machine to a specific region rather than region free.
Hopefully someone will finally work this one out.
Thanks for the reply, as you said nobody seems to have a difinitive answer and it is somewhat frustrating. I cannot get my dvd player to multi regional, instead it just lets me select whatever region I want. I am desperate to play region 1 dvds on the player as I can start ordering them on the net. I went through the regions last night about 20 times to see whether or not the dvd player would lock and so far it has not, so I am praying that it won`t! I will keep you posted and thanks for your help.
As a rule, the answer is `no`. The only players I know of which do this are the 1st-generation (1998 ) Philips and Grundig decks - and, of course, computer DVD-ROM drives.
Believe me, if most players were in the habit of locking to a region after a specified number of changes, you`d have heard a lot more about it by now ;)
