RE: Whats your favourite High Street DVD Retailer ?

HMV are really the best as they carry the widest variety of movies of any high street chain and often, but not always, have some prety good deals going on. You just have to patient and wait for the right moment or buy online.

RE: HMV Refund Policy

It is worth noting that if you an item like your panny using a credit card (Barclaycard anyway) then you can get another years free cover from them if you request it withing 30 days of purchase.

RE: john ritter r.i.p.

Very sad to hear this - when did this happen as I seem to have missed mention of it on CBS News today.

Most recently he played the father of the main character in the excellent TV comedy Scrubs on Channel 4.

RE: X Files Box sets.... PLEASE HELP!!!

The individually released X Files such as Deadalive go back to the early days when the show was released on video for the first time and, as with Stargate SG1, as they were not sure how it would sell they limited the releases to some of the best. This tends to be the main alien conspiracy storyline theme rather than the standalone episodes with the exception of Tooms. I have all of these on video but I have not seen them available as individual DVD`s so I presume they are only available as part of the full box sets. This is a horrible approach in my view (also used by Star Trek) where you have to buy an entire season if you want it on DVD. The Stargate people have made a better marketing job of it altogether.

RE: Belleville Rendez-vous - Great film!

The advert for this movie in the papers absolutely raved about this - all the reviewers appear to have given it at least 4 or 5 stars. I tried to persuade my family to go and see it but they hadn`t heard of it and so it was a non-starter. This has cult movie written all over it.

RE: WOOLWORTHS !!! Not such a GREAT Disney Bargain !!!

If the offer did not clearly state the expiry date then you have a good case - but print off an image of the screen showing the discount offer if still possible as evidence.

RE: Amazing Service from Blackstar

You might change your mind if you found an even cheaper version! But in truth they do seem to offer a really good service and they have been around for quite a while.

One question though which I can`t find the answer to on their site is regarding payment for preorders - do they take the money straight away or only when the product is released (which would be the honourable thing to do)? I was thinking about preordering the extended verion of Two Towers for my daughter and they say there is a saving of £9.00 but you have to wonder what the retail high street price will be in the end. I might be better off getting it from Woolies (the wife gets a 10% discount). Does anyone know what the general track record for prices is for preorder versus on the day release?

RE: How long did it take evesham to deliver your computer?

Had one of theirs - bargepole - get a Dell.

RE: Warning re XP service pack 1

Thanks for the comments.

Actually we do run a firewall and backup regularly etc.. and I always used to run the security updates before the debacle with the service pack. We also have Norton Antivirus which updates itself regularly and I am always careful not to open emails unless I am sure so we get along OK.

That being said it annoys the hell out of me that I can`t download the service pack and can`t get help without paying for it which my boss won`t do. He also has forbbiden me from trying the service pack again and he has a point if it causes more damage that it is supposed to fix.

RE: Request from Moderator - stop shouting !!!!

Are there no chappettes posting then?

RE: Can DVD player in US laptop play DVD`s from(in) the UK??????

Be warned - computers in general will allow you to change to specific regions but only for a severely limited number of times before permanently locking you into the final region you select. I have a desktop Dell and this allows only 5 changes!

A lot of the DVD players can be easily hacked to be region free and you need to have a look a the different sections of this site as it is all here for the uninitiated.

My advice would be to leave the laptop alone as buying a dirt cheap UK DVD from somewhere like Argos will cost you less than £50.00 which is probably cheaper than getting a software engineer to even look at your laptop!

RE: Amazing Service from Blackstar

Midly cynical point: they may be so quick to despatch as this gives you no time to change your mind as you can only cancel before despatch and only return (as I understand it with all of these retailers) if the thing is faulty. :/

RE: home networking help, any comments appreciated!

I nearly killed myself trying to connect our new Dell running XP with an older P166 running 95 and completely failed to do it. There are lots of suggestions out there but none of them worked for me. Then I realised that the whole exercise was pointless as the versions of programs like Word were not compatible and this meant that the older machine could not read files from the newer. It was obvious really if I had though it through in the first place but I suppose the lesson is to decide whether you really, really need the two machines to be connected or would it just be nice. The way things are going it would seem that you almost have to buy two new machines at the same time to be sure of a connection. The manufacturers, like Dell, don`t support networking anyway (another shock) so if you get it to work you are a lucky g*t.

Warning re XP service pack 1

Our office machine is a fairly decent Dell 45 Dimension running Windows XP Professional etc.. and we allowed it to happily update itself for a while. Then we were advised that we should download the service pack. Even using our broadband connection this was a fairly longish process including the software installation but is was achieved. The problem was that Windows would not start at all! I could only get it to go with a safe mode but I was at least able to access restore system and go back in time to undo. Phew!

Some time later, having failed to learn my lesson, I tried it again and this time could not rescue myself with system restore. I had to reload the XP from CD which was a major hassle. I have now only downloaded the critical updates and ignored the security updates. This sems to be safe enough for us as we are not connected to another machine and do not use an addressbook for emailing, thereby thwarting evil viruses for the most part.

I am sure that this must have been discussed elsewhere and I have seen other reports of this type in other forums but do find myself non-plussed!

Dare I ever venture a subtantial download from Microsoft again?

RE: cookies

I think this is because banks use a higher security level and you may need to allow individual access to the given site. If you see a little eye icon pop up on the status line this means that access is being blocked and you need to click on this and follow through to allowing that individual site or group of sites permission.

We had the same problem at work when accessing a secure site and I think that the prob. cropped up suddenly as there had been some change to the site.

RE: Help:windows media player 9?cant play DVDs.

Suggest you uninstall and revert to previous version. Sometimes it is better to stick with what works as so many `improvements` frankly just end up cocking your machine up no end for little gain. If you are running something like Windows XP you could try to use the system restore first and go back in time.

Good luck!

RE: Have just had a roasting from my manager

Your job sounds like one of those dreadful call centres that have been featured on a number of tv documentaries. If the work is really so intensive that you can literally only walk away from your desk to use the loo then you seriously need to look for another job. This kind of unrelenting pressure is bad for your health and doesn`t, in fact, result in better work.

There is some good advice in this thread but at the end of the day if the company is being unreasonable you can expect them to react badly to you asserting your rights. Be prepared for the worst and don`t forget you can claim for constructive dismissal at a tribunal if they make your life so difficult that you have to leave.

Good luck!

RE: Amazing Service from Blackstar

I take your point about price but I forgot to mention in my original post that I paid less for the particular movies from Blackstar than I could quickly find anywhere else so I would say that they are worth a look at least.

Cheers.

RE: Euro Disney

Went a few years ago with the wife and kids in May (school time) and the place was as quiet as you could want - no queue for Space Mountain at all! But having been on it once I didn`t want to do it again anyway - I suppose I am just a bit to old to enjoy the scary rides.

We stayed in the park but were not particularly impressed with the hotel and certainly not with the food which is a poor copy of the US version but not properly cooked! Many years ago I did visit Disney Florida and loved it to bits. As has been said already here the biggest disappointment are the French themselves who simply aren`t up to the job. This is a shame because a visit to Disney is more of an American/British experience than anything else and you are not visiting France in any real sense so I am not criticising France itself but this double ersatz version.

Still rather enjoyed it though.

Amazing Service from Blackstar

Recently ordered a couple of DVD`s separately at around mid-day - they were despatched same day and arrived next morning! Have to say I am impressed. Movies were Bully and Some Girl but I got the feeling that this would have happened whatever the title. Didn`t pay postage on Bully either.

RE: Possible damage or region lock?

People keep asking questions like this (including me) and nobody seems to have a definitive answer. It is true that some machines will only allow a maxumim of 25 changes before locking to a region but whether this applies to your (or my Phillips 733) I have not idea.

The question becomes more important if a disc has this newish RCE type of coding which can be got round by setting your machine to a specific region rather than region free.

Hopefully someone will finally work this one out.

RE: SG1 boxset question

The frustrating thing about this season 1 confusion is that I now have missing episodes, particularly The Nox which to my knowledge has never been transmitted on terrestrial TV before. When first released I was renting the videos but this and one other ep was missed from the series so that I have still not seen it (only referred back to in later eps). Trouble is, although I have been buying individual DVD`s (they have been only £6.99 at HMV until now) these eps are only included on the full season 1 boxset. Aaarghh!

RE: Harry Potter mania getting REALLY stupid!!!!

I do remember that a first edition of this book sold at auction for £6000.00 which when compared to $7000.00 makes the ebay offer a possible good investment.

RE: Don`t do it

Talking of wally - do any of you remember the bizarre adverts used to sell shares in the power company sell offs by the Conservatives. In particular there were two actual Star Trek adverts using William Shatner as Kirk and Scotty and Shatner actually called someone (the actor who played Arthur Dent in Hitchhikers` Guide) a wally.

This was possibly the most surreal experience of my life.

RE: Air con?

How much can you afford? We have two excellent DeLonghi PAC 36 units that have a separate heat exchanger that you place outside and that automatically pumps the water out. Brilliant but at over a grand each not for the faint hearted.

RE: Best stuff to clear a REALLY blocked toilet?

The most viscious concotion is either a product called `One Shot` (or something similar but which is acid based) or the old standby of caustic soda (although I am not sure if this would be OK for a loo as it gets hot when mixed in solution and is normally used to unblock outside drains. There are also some new types that use enzymes to naturally break stuff down.

A story my daughters friend tells (probably apocryphal) concerns a visit she made to her boyfriends parents home. During a family meal at which the boy`s grandparents were in attendance she went to use the upstairs loo. After a fairly heavy dump she found, to her horror, that it just would not flush away. Eventually, in sheer desperation she got a wire hanger and hooked the offending object out, flinging it out of the window. Thinking that this has nicely solved the problem she washed up and sauntered back downstairs.

When she arrived back in the conservatory where the meal was taking place she couldn`t understand the oppresive silence and glares she was getting until she looked up and realised that the window in the loo was directly above the sloping clear glass roof of the conservatory and the offending jobbie was slowly sliding down the panes.
---

True or not I have to confess that very nearly wet myself laughing after hearing this one.

Good luck with your blockage.

RE: 50hz 100hz

Steer clear of 100hz for the moment as Phelings has hit the nail on the head. We tried a 100hz and the wife and kids hated the `artefacts` produced by tweaking referred to. I could have lived with it but we ended up with a cheaper 50hz and are happy enough with this. Eventually the technology will live up to its hype but not today and not unless you want to spend very serious money.

RE: Dawsons creek (possible spoiler)

I doubt if there is anyone who cares, including the cast themselves. This must have been one of the most annoying and unconvincing `teen` dramas ever.

Bring back `Young Americans` - much better all round.

RE: who got the best bargains in hmv

I noticed that they have the Roots series box set for £9.99. Didn`t buy it but was tempted.
