If japan also comes under region 2 is it not possible to buy cheap DVD players from there that will play UK DVDs.

Rest of Region 2 - PAL

This won`t make too much difference in the great scheme of things, as long as the player can happily convert NTSC to PAL

Avoid NTSC Panasonic players at all costs ... they cannot playback PAL .. some others cannot playback PAL also so be VERY carefeull what you buy
