Page 1 of How to get a region free Sony Playstation 2?

I have a SP2 (the japanese version) with the dvd driver 1.01. What can I do to watch all regions? Is there a crack, hack disc, chip, anything?

Apparently, after talking to some very reliable sources, there is a disc around that updates the firmware and allows the Jap PS2 become multi region.

However, before all PS2 fans go "Yahhhhoooo" it`s apparently been disabled on the US and UK PS2`s and they will only play their own regions...although I`m sure there`s gonna be a chip developed by one of our hardware friends soon. :)
(by the way, I have no idea where you can get the disc, but I`m sure someone will here! )

You can hack the uk one with the playstation 1 handset and also there is a chip available.

So, does anyone knows where can i find that disc, or can someone tell me what should i do with the playstation 1 handset?

You will only be able to play Jap dvds if you have the 1.01 driver...when the first batch of PS2s came out it came with the 1.00 driver, you could play region 1 dvds by using an original PS pad and holding the d pad up or use a remote control made by EMS that would let you play them,but you could nt play all films and on most of them you could,nt access the extras.I owned this one until i foolishly tried to chip it to make it region free but ended up breaking it..i was mislead into buying it...i ended up trading it in for spare parts to my local importer and using it for a deposit for another,the new one i have has the 1.01 driver and does nt accept the utility disc that i have with the 1.00 driver in it..i also tried it out with my first memory card with this driver in it but it does nt work,maybe i am doing something wrong as some shops and sites are selling memory cards with the 1.00 driver on it...the only way i can see round this is waiting for the US PS2 gameshark to come out ,there s a good chance this will make it region free.

Right, I`ve been spending a lot of time trying to find this out, and I can tell you NOT to buy a mod-chip at this time... I have been told [and experienced] that as of right now there is a 30% chance of success, and a high percentage of the 70% failure is a chance of your PS2 blowing up. I have an original Jap PS2, bought it last april, and I got another one for x-mas. I bought one from Mod-chip.com, it blew up my PS2 the first time I used it. Went to get one from a store that advertises MOD installation, and they refused to ruin my Jap PS2, as there was a very small chance of it working. They said that they won`t do anything until the end of January/beginning of Feb. By that time they should have perfected the Mod chip.
Oh, and by the way, I have the version 1.00 utility disc...
With the PS1 controller, there are a couple ways I`ve heard of, haven`t had the chance to try them out yet... First, you can hold the Up arrow [has to be a non-analog controller] from the time you turn on the PS2... There is also one where you use the PS2 controller and hold R1, O, and Select [I believe that`s right] from the time you turn it on... Hope this helps people out... if you find out any of these work, email me, I`m on vacation, can`t use PS2 right now.
