Integrated Digital TV`s

xHCx (Competent) posted this on Monday, 15th July 2002, 01:13

OK so my parents TV blew tonight (in the middle of London`s Burning apparently) so they now need a new one and i`m in charge of getting a decent one.

It has to be widescreen and minimum 28" but not necessarily flat. My mum suggested she would like to have a digitally integrated one but their price range is in the less than £500 bracket so i don`t see there being too many models around for the price, also their video is shagged so could anyone point me in the direction of the best models or any offers in shops about TV + Video (separates) deals?

Any advice apreciated.
Chris

Chris check out Empire Direct online or over the phone at either www.empiredirect.co.uk or 0870 1200 730. I bought a JVC TV last year the price in all the usual major outlets was similar at £599.99 with a difference of maybe a few pence here or there I paid £468 for the same TV and that included delivery costs. Go ahead give them a phone and by the way they do good deals on Videos as well.

Have a look in this month`s What HiFI - they are reviewing 28" widescreens. The Philips 6006 28 & 32" models are well thought of, and in the price range (a squeeze for the 32", maybe). Try http://www.qed-uk.com too - they have some excellent prices, and I`ve always found their service good. Also http://www.unbeatable.co.uk . You might want to consider getting a TV and vid from the same manufacturer, as TV remotes all seem to be able to control a same brand vcr these days - a little thing, but my parents find it handy.

None of these are iDTVs, however an ITVDogdytal box can be added for around £50 available through small ads or local computer fairs.

If you can wait though, the STB may be very affordable early next year;

I must agree, the JVC or Philips sets are best bang / bucks. I say this even though I had a bad Philips from Currys - just don`t buy it there.

No need to buy same brand VCR - TV remotes only do basic VCR functions anyway, use a VCR remote to control TV - my VCR is the Toshiba V711UK and it controls lots of TVs. It`s readily available from Argos for 129.99, worth the extra £30 over no-name VCRs. It`s NTSC/PAL, Dual-Speed, NICAM, Videoplus Deluxe/PDC, TV-LINK and Autosetup and it rewinds tapes damn quick! Useful when you`ve a panic on when favourite proggie is about to start! ;)
