I have a Toshiba TV its a 28ZD06B the 100hz model from last yr which,... has a component video input [which i understand is the best way to connect from dvd to tv].
I`m now interested in buying a dvd player and,... I have been looking at marantz and toshiba`s with both companies now offering cheapish players with progressive scan. After emailing toshiba and no reply,... is there anyone who could tell me whether the benefits of prog scan will work WITH my tv [is it suitable], or is it money down the Tube???
cheers for anyones help.......
Money down the tube - Prog Scan in PAL technically does not exist yet, although Harmon Kardon DVD25 owners are enjoying it, via an unofficial firmware version available somewhere on the Internet :-)
RE: Progressive scan Ignorance.
cheers clayts,.....im not sure whether the prog scan on the toshiba player is for ntsc discs Only though??? It says ntsc at toshies site,...I`d presume that means for ntsc discs but,.. if i bought a region 2 player then it wouldn`t play region 1 without a hack so,.... what would the purpose of ntsc be??? Excuse my ignorance.i`m a newbie to this jargon.
RE: Progressive scan Ignorance.
clayts, "Prog Scan in PAL technically does not exist yet" Keep up son, keep up;-)
Arcam now do the DV88+ £1000. This is the worlds first Macro licenced Pal Prog Scan player allthough the DV88 and FMJ-DV27 have had this avalible for some time via a hand set hack (as reported by DVD Reviewer some time ago I think.) I belive Primare do one as well.
All the best,

Siimage.com supply products that convert Interlaced video signals to Progressive signals, PAL or NTSC. They are pricey & are used with home theatre projectors.
The Iscan Pro is the best product at the moment. It takes interlaced ntsc/pal,s-vhs,composite & component signals & converts them to either rgb sinc on green progressive or rgb seperate H&V sinc or progressive componet out via its 15 pin D plug output. This can then be fed to any tv/monitor/projector that accepts these type of outputs
RE: Progressive scan Ignorance.
We use one of those kiddys on our fujitsu plasma and it works well. The full link is http://www.siimage.com/products/iscan.asp and is avalible from most good home theater shops.

Andrew - just found out about the DV88Plus this morning, courtesy of Home Entertainment - is it any good, then, picture-wise ?
RE: Progressive scan Ignorance.
I have not got one yet, But I would think it will be the same as the DV88 with the non licenced PAL Prog Scan.
All the best you luck sod,

The Far East spec Philips Q50 and 962 are prog scan for both NTSC and PAL - the European models are not prog scan at all, IIRC. I have a feeling that a new model (963?) may be prog scan over here, and may well be able to be hacked for PAL prog. You can import the Q50 from http://www.hivizone.com, or if you can find somewhere in Australia, they seem to be cheaper over there.
The Prog scan versions of these players are meant to be very good - people have had excellent results driving their projectors with them, where the image quality is apparently very close to a well set up computer. For more info have a look over on http://www.avforums.com - do a search for Q50, or Philips progressive.
RE: Progressive scan Ignorance.
And the answer to my question IS:
Nobody has a clue Here!
It seems that my tv doesnt have prog scan on it as the later P model does so,... this is why it will not work. [just incase anyone out there is thinking the same].
Without being 100% accurate....A progressive scan dvd needs to plug into a TV that HAS prog scan internal circuitry in it. Just having Component video in sockets does not mean that it will display Prog scan DIRECTLY from a DVD that has Prog scan output. thanks for the help :-)
