recordable DVD players

Ok, forgive me for my ignorance but i was considering taking the plunge and getting a recordable dvd player (or at least hoping someone else will take the plunge for me at Xmas!!)

Anyway, i was wondering what was the most reasonable price anyone has seen for one of these devices and the best format.

My big prob is not wanting to get something which will be defunct pretty soon....

thanks in advance of the avalanche of replies!!

There has been quite a few posts on this subject over the past few months (you may want to try a search)

From my recollection there is the Philips and the Panasonic ones, the Panasonic ones being the best (I think?). It`s the D30 or E30 or something like that, that`s the latest model. Techtronics have this (modded to multi region) for about £340.

Hope this helps :o)

You can`t really call the Panasonic range `the best` as it depends entirely on what you want to use it for (and individual opinion). If you want a permanent replacement for your VCR, then the Panny decks (with -RW/RAM and play-while-record functionality) are probably more suitable. If you`re simply looking to archive TV/Video/LD stuff to DVD then there`s not much difference really. BUT, if you`re looking for a machine that`s competent at those things aswell as being extremely compatible with regular players, then the Philips machines win out IMO. As although the editing/features are ostensibly less impressive on the Philips decks, this is to ensure that every finished disc adheres to the DVD-Video standard...

Is there a resource site regarding the -R/-RW format in a similar vein to the +R/+RW website?
