Page 1 of Home Cinema question....

I`ve got a Pacific 1002 player. Can anyone recommend me a good, budget-priced home cinema system? I`ve heard Richer sounds is a good store- anyone got any more info?

Hey ac, really you could do with stating a price range. If you have no idea how much you are looking to spend, then look at the "ask westy" column and go a couple of weeks back to the surround packages. He gives a good set up in most price ranges.

Dont know what RS have on offer at the mo but my brother picked up the SONY DAVS500 for around £300 multiregion and I have to saya that I am well impressed by it.

Those Sony`s are no good to him, because he says he`s already bought the player... What he needs is an amp/speakers package.

Without budget information, it`s difficult. For a really nice sound, you would be best buying separates, and building slowly as you save. If you want to buy a package though, you could try :

Yamaha AVS70
Sony HT-SL5A
Altec Lansing ADA890

or the trusty Videologic Digitheater to get you going cheaply. Westy looked at some packages in one of his columns too:

Be slightly cautious of very cheap systems which are more suitable to PC use though. If you have reasonable standards, or a medium or large sized room, separates are still going to be the way to go.

I`ve just seen your earlier reply - only £100 ?! Ouch. You`re really going to struggle to get anything worth having for that - you need amplification as well as speakers you know.

In that price range, perhaps the VideoLogic Digitheatre ZXR at about £150 might do it, but don`t expect too much.

£100 is not too little but you need some form of amp to connect the speakers to. There are budget systems out there for circa £100 inc. 5 satellite speakers, and sub which has the amp built in. If you could stretch then a recommended system would be the Sony HTIB 'BABE' System. This is reviewed in the "ask westy" column on this site so you could get most answers there. Is £100 ur limit or just limit for speakers? The sony will give u 5 satellites, a sub which has the amp built in, which can do DTS, DD 5.1 and even has Pro Logic 2 whcih at this price is a bargain.

If you just state roughly what you wanna spend in total then Im sure we can recommend something for you.

Thanks for the info, chaps. I think I`d like to buy quality separates gradually, rather than a cheap package thing. Budget can definitely be stretched more, but obviously I want value 4 money. Are the separates that Argos sell overpriced and overrated? does Amp need to have optical socket?

Can I ask whether you might know why the remote for my player (pacific 1002) works so inconsistently? Works fine when player has just been switched on, then deteriorates- v.irritating. Could my Philips universal remote I use for my telly be interfering with a channel or frequency? Have tried everything but to no avail. (Any other help appreciated before I arrive at tearing out hair stage....)

Can`t think of a reason why the remotes would be performing like that - you have checked the batteries ?!

Just to clarify, those things I listed above were entire packages, not separates.
