Do both - rent a widescreen and upgrade it as you go along (try Martin Dawes if you`ve got one near you and then get BoxClever - Granada/Radio Rentals to price match it).

For surround sound you can get a reasonable separates system from Richer Sounds (try http://www.richersounds.com - the home cinema and speakers section should do it) for about 400 notes.

Don`t be tempted by this all in one jobs - the Videologic, etc - unless you have a living room the same size as Hammy the Hamster`s cage.

Totally agree with Clayts. Rent the TV. Try your local TV Shop, if you have one, as many of them will do rental locally, but don`t advertise the fact, and you can get some good deals that way, plus a greater choice of manufactuer.

If you`ve already got a Hi-Fi setup, consider the Yamaha E-800 processor as an add on. It connects to your existing Hi-Fi amp and gives you the extra three channels needed plus further inputs. You`d still need to add centre and rear speakers, but your existing speakers would remain in use as the front pair. Its dearer than Clayts suggestion, but very flexible. It all depends what you want to spend.
