toshiba sd120eb..is this normal?

sb34 (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 1st February 2003, 15:24

New to dvd players and things technical.Bought toshiba sd120eb from Comet and have noticed that about halfway through any dvd I play, there is a slight pause for a split second, then the film carries on playing. Is this common on this player or players in general, or is it a duffer that is should return to the shop? All dvds are genuine uk bought region 2 dvds. Thanks!!

This is just where the laser moves from 1layer to the next layer as most discs are 1 side, dual layer (It`s the only way to fit everything on, sound tracks, extras, interviews etc, etc). If you play the disc on another player, it should pause at the same spot. Nothing to worry about. This is my understanding anyway but there are some real clever guys on this site who can probably give you an explanation using longer words than I can think of!

Hi,

It`s not your machine, it is the discs, but this is perfectly normal.

DVD`s are recorded on two layers on the same side of the disc, this is called dual layering.

When the film get half way through the laser has to refocus on the second layer, thus triggering a split second pause.

This is normal so do not worry. Check the back of your DVD cases and in the small print at the bottom, you will read "Dual layer format, transition may trigger a slight pause"

Hope this helps.
