Its all gone RED. Please Help.

I have just been given a 6yr (aprox) old SONY TV as my 13 yr old one finally gave up the ghost. When I tried to play a DVD on the new TV it is all black and red. Its the same for all my DVDs (even the proper ones). I`ve looked in the manual but it does not mention anything about DVD players or what to do if the picture turns red. Its fine on the TV and the Video. Any ideas? or am I going to have to buy a new TV? please say not!

Which DVD player do you have, and does it have a setting to output PAL ? Do a search on the DVD reviewer forums for "black and white" - it`s a common question.

I`ve got the original Alba108 (not the Xi) and it worked wonderfully with the old TV.

This is not a very technical answer, but I had a problem with everything going red when I was trying to sort out routing signals through a switching box - possibly something to do with confusion over RGB signals. Make sure the input on the TV is RGB capable, or if not make sure you are outputting the correct signal from the DVD player. Just a guess I`m afraid, but I suspect the problem can be sorted. Presumably you`re not sending the signal through the VCR.

Dodgy SCART socket on the TV perhaps? Or possibly a dodgy cable - have you tried a different SCART lead?

I assume you`re using a RGB SCART connection here - this problem would arise if the Green and Blue signals weren`t getting through for some reason, e.g. due to bad socket contacts or a damaged cable. Your video is fine because it`s outputting a composite signal, not RGB.

If the RGB input on the TV is bad and you`re not able or willing to repair it, you can try using the composite output from your DVD player. Try changing from "RGB" to "Video" if your player supports it - otherwise, simply cut the wire connected to pin 16 inside the SCART plug (this disables RGB switching).
