Page 1 of My Philips 32" widescreen tv "flickers" when there are explosions and flashes......

Hi all - this might seem like a stupid liitle problem, but it`s one of those things that once you notice, it can get a bit frustrating!!

I have a Philips 32PW6515 widescreen tv that`s about 9 months old. Whenever there`s a big explosion or a sudden flash, the picture always seem to flicker briefly - I was just wondering if this sort of thing is normal and whether I should do anything about it before the 12 month guarantee is up!?

It is definitely the tv that does this (not the dvd), as it also happens on videos, sky, and plain old terrestrial tv. It seems such a small point, but on movies like "Die Hard" and "Aliens" it happens quite a lot!

Is this not the `pixelation` problem mentioned in connection with the 6515,be it the 28 or 32 ?
Sounds helluva like it, although what you can do about it is debatable as it seems to be a ` foible ` of this TV.
It has been mentioned quite a few times on this site, and this struck it off my list of possible new TV`s.
If the TV`s under a year old I`d have thought you could always try for a refund and get a make/model of TV that doesn`t have this problem, especially if it`s not repairable.
Perhaps the more legally aware on this site could help ?

Had the same problem with ours,28 inch also some geometry errors.We have a five year guarantee on ours and in two years it has failed twice! ,the first time was a known problem with the scart signalling, it suddenly started changing to AV all on its own and would not let you select normal channels.
The second time it failed i explained the problem to the enginneer who came out and on return it seems cured.This model suffers from fishbowling at the right hand side of the screen,figures emerging or disappearing off the right side of the screen suddenly become thinner at the extreme right edge.
The artifacting i think is linked to the transformer having to supply a large load evertime the screen flashes to bright white.The effect is very noticable in programs featuring the effect of some one taking photos on screen as this creates a rapid change of brightness.
I tended to get white lines across the screen and occasionally black or red lines or patches.

This site has info about these teles including geometry setup but dont dabble if you dont understand what your doing as its easy to screw up big time and before you change anything jot down all those figures for back up.

could this be the wobble effect that happens when the image quickly changes from a dark one to a bright one? i notice this on my li`l old 14" and have seen it on loads of other tvs - i think a derivative of it is also noticeable when there`s, say, a white band running across a dark scene, the edge of the tv screen is warped where the white area runs off...
with regard to the wobble effect, it seems as if the screen suddenly gets larger for a second and then `shrinks` to its normal size...

I know exactly what your problem is as I had the same on two PW6515 (32") that I bought and replaced last year. Try watching Blade at the end when the lightning is whirling around the room etc, it becomes most distracting. The picture momentarily breaks up into black and white "interference" in the middle third of the screen. It happens when there is a very sudden change of brightness and contrast. Philips apparently claim there is nothing wrong with the TV, however, word is there was a bad batch about a year ago that Philips have managed to fix on the production line (this falls into line with your and my time period). I sent mine back to my retailer immediately claiming it was "faulty" because essentially it was. I had a replacement 6515 which did the same so then returned it in favour of a Sony which I am very happy with. I`m not sure whether it can be fixed but you had at least better try. If the problem persists you may get a replacement of the same model (from an obviously newer batch that won`t have the problem) or something else. Its a shame because I loved everything else about the TV, but its impossible to ignore the problem when you have noticed it!

Like i said in my post mine has been cured of the artifacting/interference but still suffers from the white bowing mentioned in the other post.I read somewhere lots of makes of tv suffer from this as the transformers arent powerful enough to provide enough current for a full bright white screen.If you tun the sound on the tv down and play something that sends it bright white signals you can usually hear a louder buzzing sound as the thing cranks up to full power.

Thanks for the replies guys! I phoned Philips and they said to contact the place where I bought it (Currys).

I`m a bit worried as I`ve had a few problems with Currys before - (they might complain that I left it too long/why didn`t I contact them earlier!?) But the TV has still got 2 months of it`s year guarantee left - and for the money, you want everything to be perfect, don`t you!! (If they make a fuss, I`ll tell them what you guys have said!)
