HELP!! Schneider dvd 857 Excessive noise

riko (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 17th May 2003, 15:22

Just bought the dvd 857 from my local asda. However when playing dvds it makes a very loud noise. It sounds like the whole player is vibrating. Ive tried putting the dvd player on different surfaces but nothing seems to help. I just wondered if this was normal? will i have to put up with the noise and turn the volume on my tv up???

Cheers for any help

Graham

No noise from mine had it 6 mths . Maybe the componants have been altered on later models causing your noise . Not to sure to be honest .
All I can suggest is to take it back to asda and get an exchange and if still no joy then return for a refund and have a look for something else .

BTW can I ask if you have enabled the multi - region via the code . If so did it work . The reason I ask is I recommended this player to a friend in December and the code would not work but it did on mine .

Returned it within 3 hours of buying and got a new one. Still have the same problem. The noise is definately the disc spinning up but its so loud you just cant concentrate on a film. Im going to return the 2nd one tomorrow and i might get a pacific 1002. a mate has one and has had no problems. just liked the 5.1 on the 857.

Sorry havent got any R1 discs so never tried the hack.

Muti Region hack

switch on
press "open / close"
Press "Clear"
Press 1, 3, 6, 9, 0
press "open / close"

This sets the machine to any region, pressing 1 at the end instead of 0 will set the region to region 1 etc etc....

Hack came direct from manufacturers, worked first time on my machine. My only concern with this machine is the vibrating from the disk tray when watching a film!!!

Best of luck

Rich

thanks for the info on the multi - region thing guys . Also thought i`d let you know that I have an xbox sitting on top of the player maybe that`s why I have`nt noticed any vibration . So try a couple of bricks from the garden before you take it back . ha sorry .

I too have this exact same problem with the player vibrating VERY loudly! Has anyone else who`s had this problem been able to resolve it somehow??? I wrote to Schneider directly but they said they`ve had no other feedback about this issue!!!

This is the second time I`ve exchanged my player at Asda (the one in Colindale) making this my THIRD player - with exactly the same problem of loud noise. I wish this wasn`t happening because other than this issue, it`s a fantastic player! (The problem only occurs with DVDs for some reason, not with audio CDs, VCDs or CD-Rs.)

By the way, the handbook that came with the player has Revision 3 written on the back which I think means that they`ve updated the software to accept jpegs and mpegs (and also changed the multi-region hack to the one given above). Revision 1 didn`t have the fancy software but also didn`t have this annoying vibrating problem!

And, for your information, elsewhere on this forum I`ve read that the multi-region hack (above) also disables macrovision (at least it does on Revision 3 models). Indeed it does. I applied the hack and then attached the scart lead from the player via the scart input socket in my VCR and I was able to WATCH movies perfectly fine. But when I tried to RECORD, the resulting recording on the video tape was totally distorted (even though the picture on the screen was perfect while the recording was taking place). Does macrovision somehow know when you`re recording? But then, the picture on the screen was fine while recording, just the actual copy of the film on tape that was distorted. Am I doing something wrong? Could it be because my VCR is also a Schneider model?

As for the DVR-R, aren`t there different types? Maybe Schneider and Pacific models only accept a certain types. Sorry I can`t be more help.

I have exactly the same issue regarding the Schnider.. I have had it for a few months and I am seriously considering taking it back. I orginally had the Pacific which apart from asthetics was a fantastic player. I upgraded to the Schneider as it has option to output 5.1 sound to speakers and also as it looks (imo) better than the Pacific 1002.

The noise for me only seems to occur with certain discs... And I was wondering if it was a problem to do with varying thickness of discs and their lable. Anyway I am seriously considering taking it back and getting a Accoustic Solutions from Richer Sounds. My Girlfriend has one and I am much fonder of it than I am of my Schneider....

I got one as a third player. I took it back within 2 days and got a refund. It too sounderd like it was going to shake itself to pieces on certain discs. I tried the same discs in a panasonic rv31 and sony dvnsp430 and they were silent with no vibrations. Get rid and get a real player!!!

I got 2 from Asda Roehampton and am getting the same noise problem - I`ve tried getting to Schneider help desk but no one ever answers. I think the JPeg facility is excellent and generally find no faults except the noise only on Film DVDs/

I`d be interested if anyone is able to resolve this problem.

Cheers

Update: Managed to eventually talk to Schneider UK (in Sale) they are aware of slight noise but their factory claim it is caused by the thickness of the DVDs that are played which they can`t do anything about. I asked differnce between Pacific 1002 (which they also make) and the Schneider 857 - they said almost identical but 1002 came out later - they are not aware of problems with it. Am considering taking mine back and changing it to a 1002.
