What about the Samsung DVDH40E 40GB HD and DVD-R/RAM at £310

Having read all the arguements on which format is best, I have a feeling this one will run and run or be solved by the price of DVD-R/+R media and which is most favoured for piracy (cynical I know).

If mini-disc and CD`s had been released at the same time, most people would have got more benefit from mini-disc than CD and there is a similar comparison between DVD+R/RW and DVD-RAM. Who know`s - the technologies will probably develop still further before long and neither will be a winner!. On the other hand, strong opinion is so equally divided both may be around with equal share of the market.

Anyway I reckon £310 for a DVD-RAM/R recorder with 40GB of HD and 5.1 appears unmissable all arguements considered - the name becomes a little less relevant too. Has anyone read any reviews or got one?

Isn`t it better to have the facility to record to hard disc (hd) as opposed to DVD Ram?

You can just keep recording on hd and if necesarry overwrite what you don`t want or save to DVD-R if you want to archive anything. I believe you can use timeslip to enable you to watch a programme whilst recording at a different part.

Regards, I am torn between going for the Samsung or the JVC DRM1.

If you want to collect/archive anything you need a dvd recorder. If you are just watch and wipe then HDD is the better option, like Sky+.
With the more sophisticated HDD/DVDR the hard disc can be edited to perfection before transfer to dvd-r.
The Samsung is one for the watch and wipe brigade,a useful device if you don`t wish to shell out for Sky+.But Sky+ offers quite a few significant advantages over any other HDD device, from any part of the price spectrum.
If you do not plan to collect/archive any tv stuff,go for the Samsung, but if you wish to keep anything the Samsung is no use at all.
