DIGITAL TV? WHICH WAY!

colseddon (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 12th June 2003, 10:13

I was thinking of getting SKY DIGITAL as i`m about to move into my first house.

BUT the previous owners already have mini dish and BOX thingy and they said they can leave it if we are wanting to have SKY DIGITAL and save on any installation costs etc?

Does any1 know how this would work! and is this the best way to go about it, cos the equipment therefore won`t be brand new and may not have a warranty on them for repairs etc.

any advice on my options and possible costs appreciated thanks in advance.

col.
ps. i think i might go for sky sports world at £31 a month or just sky sports 1(1M) at £27 a month depending on whether i need sky sports 2 and sky sports extra.!!!

Is ntl worth a look ????

How much are they going to charge you to leave it?

NOTHING. They just need to know we definitely want it first probably so they can let SKY know when they leave.

Would go for new set up - Sky offer of £10 install at the minute - I got it last year when a similiar deal was on. Part of the terms was you needed to take Skyworld - basically everything at £40 pm but local dealer said take it for a month and change to Skysports channel at £30.
For the saving of £4 - not worth it - if your a football fan. Sky have the champions league and will use numerous channels to show all the live games.

Peter

I saw on SKY website that you can even get standard installation for £1
if you subscribe to SKY WORLD package which i think is £38.
Maybe this is the way to go but don`t know if their are any strict terms and conditions.

What does it cost to have sky sports on ntl.

And why does sky digital have to be connected to a phone line, will it ever charge me on my bill for any of the services? Which?? And when will it engage the line?? Thanks.

I believe the Sky Digi-box has to be connected to the telephone line for a period of twelve months as Sky have an agreement with British Interactive Services ? . This allows Sky to subsidise the Digi-box as part of the deal. I think you can buy a Digi-box privately and then take out a subscription without the need for a telephone connection as the box may not be subsidised but I am not 100% certain.
Given the choice I would go for a new installation as this will provide you with a reasonably new Digi-box and as such it will in all probability be faster than the one left by the previous tenants by having the latest ? chipset. Another benefit would be that you could use the old Digi-box to phanny about and use in another room to watch ITV2 Champions league while taping Sky One or Movies etc. I think you have to call some department to get a viewing card for the F.T.A. channels.

PS
After installation of the new system simply unplug the telephone line , that is what we did . All this would mean is that you would have to re-connect the telephone line if you wanted to view a P.P.V. channel.

The phone line has to be connected as the digibox dials sky on average once a month to download any PPV info you have watched so they can bill you. From what I can gather Sky will let go 3 none-dialins and will then contact you regarding breach of contract (ie. you are supposed to have the line plugged in all the time). Not that I know anyone who has been called though.

Only reason we did it initially was the On-Line light was coming on every few minutes so we contacted Sky who sent out an "Engineer" . He advised us to simply disconnect the telephone line which we did. Never had any call back from Sky but I cannot say this may not be the case now.
