Did I do this wrong or is it my TV

wolliwuk (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 15th June 2003, 17:27

I ahve a Toshiba 125E. I bought the Toshiba as I read that they were pretty easy to hack and make multi region. I followed the links and downloaded the files and made the CD. Ran the CD just like the instructions said. I put in an NTSC disk and still get the purple strip across the screen saying NOT PAL. Have I done something wrong or could it be my 10 year old TV is not NTSC compatible. Would it still display the NOT PAL thing if it was the TV?
I dont want to rush out and buy a new TV if it is not the TV and I want a DVD player that can play multiregion.
Is there any way of knowing and is there any toher way of making this multiregion apart from doing the firmwear upgrade?
Any help woulf be appreciated.

the tv may or may not accept pal, but the NOT PAL message is almost certainly from he dvd player

The "NOT PAL" message means you have set the output to PAL,rather than AUTO.On this setting NTSC playback is not possible at all.
Switch it to AUTO and the player will play an NTSC disc in NTSC.Toshiba players(certainly the budget ones,do not know about the upper ones) do not offer PAL60 or PAL50.If your tv is not NTSC compatible you may get B&W pictures, lines missing or other problems. As far as I know the only way to hack Tosh players is by chipping. If your cd works please note it on here.Of course if your NTSC disc is region 0 then it will play anyway.

Thanks for the replies. I went into setup and changed the output to autoand it works. So the disc I made succesfully made it multi region. Only problem is it is in black and white so i have to go out and buy a new TV.
Anyone have any good recommendations in the sub £300 category

For just £100 more you could get a Panasonic 28" widescreen set,and their 50hz sets are highly acclaimed. If your budget is set in stone go to Tescos and get one of their sets. They are bargains, but as always, you get what you pay for.

Wolliwuk, you haven`t got the player set to S-video instead of RGB have you? This would give black and white pictures.

Believe it or not, the Tosh 125E doesn`t have RGB output (!) - which is a bit of a cheek when even £50 supermarket players have it. Because of this, and the fact that PAL-60 isn`t supported, you need a NTSC-compatible TV in order to watch NTSC discs in colour with this player.

DVD players are definitely one type of product to which the phrase "you get what you pay for" does not apply!

I am enquiring as to whether you are correct in assuming the Tosh has no RGB,this is very unusual. Is it quite old.My friend has a £99 Tosh from Richer sounds and its over a year old and it has RGB.The 220 also has RGB.What picture options are you looking at?
