Yup, got one of those. No complaints (so far), in fact my wife and daughter are watching Chicago on it right now, as have it hooked up to a Sony HTSL5 Home theatre kit. Can`t answer your question about the hack as I bought mine multi-region "out of the box". IMHO, I`d be just a little careful which hack you use, as I think the one which changes regions back and forth will lock your player to the 25th region change. The preferred hack I reckon would be the multi-region one. I believe both versions are listed on this site.

Does anyone know if the dvd625 plays VCDs and SVCDs ?

According to the handbook it plays VCD & SVCD, CD, Picture CD, MP3-CD, CD-R CD-RW, DVD+R & DVD+RW. I couldn`t get a Picture CD to work (Kodak) but that may have been a misoperation on my part. HTH.
