speaker humm ?

hughesd (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 1st September 2003, 15:48

Hi there,

I`ve recently bought a receiver (Marantz SR5300), CD player (NAD) and speakers (Monitor Audio B2`s) which I have setup under my TV and with my year old DVD player ...
Playing my CD`s I have no probelm, sound is superb, but when I play DVDs through my Sanyo DV-7201 I get a faint humm from my main speakers ... no humm occurs in my center or SL & SR speakers. Would anyone have an idea as to what might be causing this ?

I don`t have a woofer and the receiver is configured so, the faint humm occurs only when I play DVD`s :( not my CDs :) ? the humm is consistent and does not vary with volume

thanks in advance
D.

The first thing to do is check that you have all the cables that you need and also the right length. It is always a good idea to separate the equipment as much as you can. If it is all crammed together you can get equipment interference which may cause a humm noise through the speakers. This can also be caused by a bad earth somewhere in the wiring so take your time.

A situation guaranteed to induce earth-loop hum is when two pieces of equipment are plugged in to the mains some way apart (separate sockets maybe several feet apart), "earthed" (through the earth pins in their three pin plugs); the earth is connected to the "signal ground" inside both units, and then the loop is completed by interconnecting the two units. The desired music signal travels along the "-" or "earth" wire, and so does any inevitable difference in potential between the earths of the two wall sockets, which will get amplified along with the music signal - result; a raspy hum which is constant and very annoying.

this might not of been any help at all, but you never know.

Try moving the Sanyo from its present position, up down away from the present position & see if the hum goes (I had a similar problem with 2 hi fi components & had to move one). Also try placing a piece of cable from one case (Sanyo) to another unit or to the earth in the socket.
