VCD & SVCD for LG3350 & AIWA 370

_007 (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 28th January 2001, 21:20

These two fine players both use C-Cube`s ZiVA-4 decoder.

The thing is this decoder has "MPEG-2 and MPEG-1 video decode" and has "full disc playback compatibility for DVD, Chaoji VCD, SuperVCD, VCD, CD-DA, and MP3 for both NTSC and PAL".

So surely with some firmware (or other) modification they could both be made to play SVCD and VCD (on the LG3350)?.

Anyone currently looking into this? I`m *thinking* at taking a poke around to see what can be done, especially on the firmware side. Anyone like to (or has) contact LG and see if they have any plans for VCD/SVCD playback and what`s in the new firmware version to be released?

Thanks,

007.

This was covered a few months back 007 (things are not the same since Q died:( )

AT the end of the day the aiwa & 3350 cant be updated by CD, so it would require an eprom chip.

Who is going to f*ck up their warranty?

What`s a warranty? ::grin::

anyways, I can enable VCD on the 3350, but Svcd cannot be enabled on either player. Dukesters right..chip change would be required.

AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!!!

Well that`s the end of that idea, if only Q was still around, I`d have a missle enabled DVD player ;-)

actually 007 these chips are not that expensive, the mpeg chips which isnt the chip you replace are sold in bulk for around 15 to 20 us dollars.

With the AIWA you don`t need it ;-)

If I`m right (which I always am!) then all you basically need is a new firmware which will playback SVCD. Good luck though, since you`ll somehow need to hack the one that`s in your player - unless you can get AIWA / LG to code you one ;-)

Youre wrong! lol

I have been in the firmware...Svcd hasn`t been enabled on the chip for some reason!!

What chip would this be Jimbo?
They both use the C-Cube`s ZiVA-4 decoder which has SVCD playback. All it needs is the software to enable/control it, and as far as I`m aware this would be done in the firmware.
When you say you`ve been in the firmware, do you mean you disassembled the firmware binary had a look at the code? Have you tried reverse engineering it?

Also 007, if you hacked the firmware, not only could you get the LG to play VCDs and SVCDs but you could also disable Macrovision.

Should be getting my LG3350e soon, see what I can do ;-)
