Tidying up VHS before burning to DVD?

DaveyD (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 6th October 2003, 08:26

Hello all,

Is there something that will "tidy-up" a VHS video before/during burning on to DVD? A (preferably free) computer program perhaps, or (preferably not a) commercial service??

I knew someone once who said something about the quality of the DVD image they`d burned as being better than the original VHS image that they`d burned it from. Or have I misunderstood them?

Any help appreciated. One day I TOO shall MASTER technology...
but only if it would stop evolving for a few goddamn years!

Yep, program doing the most is called VirtualDub, free and widely available, but you better get ready for some serious headaches, long time processing and huge disappointments.
eg: I just applied another filter to S.W. for about the 5th time, looked fine when processing but the final file has what looks like vertical lines all the way through (similar to scan lines, but vertical), rendering it basically unusable.
Oh, and that took 17 hours to process on a P4 3 Ghz!!

either talking rubbish or imagining it because their player was outputting RGB instead of the composite image their VCR was.
DVD Recorders cant magically enhance the image, they can usually brighten or darken it on some models, but things like noise which showed on the original video as say a little dot "flicking" become a block when digitally tranferred.

Although, if you manage to get the filters right, *please* feel free to lemme know....
