Transfer VHS to DVD - definitions.

Hello Everyone,

Recently I viewed an old black and white film that was commercially released on DVD. It had a bonus DVD documentary (in color, from 1980s TV). On the back cover it mentioned things that I would like to know the meanings of. Anyone help?

One... Regular 1.33:1 (possibly misread, I can`t read my own handwriting).

Two... 4:3 Transfer.

Three... Dual Layer Format - layer transition may trigger a slight pause. (This was the case throughout the b&w film, ie-when the camera zoomed in, it wasn`t smooth. It was as though frames had been taken out at certain regular intervals. This DVD was virtually flawless in every other aspect).

Four... Single Layer Format (this was used for the color TV documentary).

Five... There was also a blurb about the cover about the DVD having faithfully reproduced the films dimensions, as it was originally shown at the cinemas. (TV wasn`t invented back then, were talking, pre WWII).

I intend to either get a commercial place to transfer my old B&W films for me, or maybe do this myself. Any advice? I`ve come across cheaper versions of this DVD where the image quality was really poor, or the sound didn`t synch-up with the actor`s lips, so I`d be looking to avoid this sort of thing, obviously.

Thank-you all for any help.

16mm projector film into DVDs?

Hello Everyone,

I know this is a long shot, but is it at all possible to convert 16mm projector film into DVDs? The film is on reels similar to at the movie cinemas. If possible, how would one go about it.

Thanks,

about DVD s.lines and VHS 4&6 heads

hi all,

i have tentatively taken steps to convert VHS tapes to DVD, but need two questions answered before i can go ahead.

an s.line connects DVD to TV. what does it stand for, and how is it better than the three coloured cable i am currently using.

re: VHS. why is a 6 head player better than a 4 head. one person told me 6 head is better for editing. another told me it allows a better image quality.

i intend to transfer black and white films in mono, so would any of this matter?

thanks. some of you have been a great help in the past. much appreciated.

Splicing and editing VHS scenes and stills to DVD

Hi,

Whats the best and/or easiest way to splice and edit when converting VHS to DVD? I want to put together certain motion-scenes and stills from various films on the one DVD, with fades in between. The stills will probably have type over them. As a newbie, I need the best start at this stage. Do this on a VHS editor, on DVD(?), or on which computer program. Perhaps a combo. Cheers.

Tidying up VHS before burning to DVD?

Hello all,

Is there something that will "tidy-up" a VHS video before/during burning on to DVD? A (preferably free) computer program perhaps, or (preferably not a) commercial service??

I knew someone once who said something about the quality of the DVD image they`d burned as being better than the original VHS image that they`d burned it from. Or have I misunderstood them?

Any help appreciated. One day I TOO shall MASTER technology...
but only if it would stop evolving for a few goddamn years!

RE: Can I hack a DVD to burn in Multi-region?

Thanks again Guys (where`s the Gals?),

My questions seem to have been answered. I`m going to open another pandoras box. It`ll be a new thread on this discussion board with the title "Tidying up VHS before burning to DVD?". Hope this is the right board. Cheers also to the moderator who transferred this thread here. Thanks.

You may be interested to know that the Panasonic rep here in Australia said their basic standalone recordable DVD player - plays all regions but burns in Region 4. Look forward to any assistance on the new thread.

THANK-YOU all.

RE: Can I hack a DVD to burn in Multi-region?

Hello All,

Thanks for all your help with my original question. You`re all worth your weight in gold.

JOHN72, now that you mention it, please explain to me the difference between DVD+R and DVD-R. I am soon to transfer PAL VHS to DVD, so which DVD R do I buy.

Thanks all

Can I hack a DVD to burn in Multi-region?

Hello All,

If I have a recordable DVD (region4), and hack it to play all regions DVDs, does this mean that any DVDs I burn on this machine will play as a multi-regional DVD? Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Davey

Can I hack to burn in Multiregion?

Hi there,

If I hack a recordable DVD to play in multi-region format, does this mean that any DVDs burnt using this machine will play on DVD players of all regions? Any help appreciated.
