DVD Recorder? Any suggestions? Help needed

mattwhite1 (Elite) posted this on Monday, 15th December 2003, 22:28

I am looking to buy a DVD recorder either now or after Xmas. Basically it has to be Multi-Region and affordable. I have seen the MICO in Sainsburys for £199, but I think that I can get better than that.

Dont really want to go above £250, can anyone help with their wealth of knowledge?

You`re really stuck putting a £250 ceiling on your spend because most of the "quality" brands start around the £300. Although a lot of people will argue, the Philips machines seem very good quality, and the Panasonic machines offer some very advanced features. You`re taking a bit of a gamble with the lower price range as you`ll be dealing with largely unknown names but that doesn`t seem to be a great problem with the player market. Multiregion can be a bit of a problem. You`ll know of course that recorders don`t record any region flags, and multiregioning is only relevant to playback. Players that have been multi-hacked like some of the Philips machines have developed problems when firmware has been upgraded on hacked machines. If you have the room, a multiregion player and a recorder is the best option.

There are plenty of sites offering the Panasonic and Philips machines below £250.
Keeping away from Mico/Grundig supermarket cheapies is a good move. After all, would you buy a tin of peas from Sevenoaks Sound and Vision?
