Sky+ or DVD Recorder...Mucho questions?

A R Clarke (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 6th January 2004, 20:20

Have been thinking of opting for sky+ until I read all the rave reviews on the Panny HS2. At this stage is it sensible to plunge into the world of DVD Recordable. If the Panny is worth looking at can I do the following:

a) Can I record from my camcorder onto the DVD discs
b) If so will they play on other peoples machines,(memories for the grandparents living abroad)
c) Is the machine multi-region?

I currently own a Panny scdt-100 home cinema system. Can the HS2 be linked to this so I can still benefit from the 5.1 cinema sound?

Sorry if the questions are silly but any help or opinions on my ponderings would be gratefully received. Thank you all in advance.......

It all depends on your exact requirements. Both offer important advantages over each other.Do you want to watch a lot of tv recordings,or is archiving stuff to dvd more important.
The HS2(£539) has an editable HDD,so you can edit anything to perfection before putting it on dvd,but any recording from Sky will leave the digibox out of action while you record, although you can watch a dvd while this goes on.Or watch a Sky recording you made earlier on the HDD,while the HDD continues the current recording. The Timeslip on the HS2 shows the DVDRAM version up for the gimmick it is.
Sky+ allows recording and watching 2 different satellite channels simultaneously,or even recording 2 simultaneously, while watching any recording from Sky+`s 20 hour archive. But thats it.Sky+ is not able to edit, but for recording off tv,its reliance on the EPG makes it an astoundingly simple bit of kit to use.Once you have Sky+ there`s no going back .You will never want to give it up.Ideally, get both-I have them and the combination of Sky+ simplicity, and the HS2 for editing and archiving is unbeatable. If you have to choose-you need to decide if you want your viewing experience enhanced,or whether archiving to dvd will be a regular thing.
Before I forget-camcorder to HDD,edit then to DVD-R is simple and will play on most players.

If only both were an option! :( Main reason for purchase is to record TV but was hoping to have the flexibility to transfer camcorder footage and possibly old vhs home movies onto DVD also. Sky+ does sound good though. If you had to chooses which way would you go?
Any ideas if the HS2 is multi region and on the connectivity to my current panny for the 5.1 experience. :/
Have just this minute read that the HS2 is excessively noisy. Any truth in this?
