WHICH DVD RECORDER?????

Fat Sam (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 2nd February 2004, 12:33

Hi,

I`m thinking about buying a stand alone dvd recorder to archive some of my old vhs films and family movies.
I`m hoping to use dvd-r or dvd-rw as this is what I use on my pc dvd writer.
I`m looking for your feedback/reviews/reccomendations. So anything you can throw my way would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I have heard you can use these to reduce the quality of the films and fit more than one film onto each dvd ? ( A problem which has vexed me with my PC as I have no idea how to do this? any suggestions?)

Thanks in advance

You have lots of options but it would help to know your budget.

I have the Panasonic E50 and bought to copy my Hi8 tapes over to DVD.

It can be bought from as low as £250 on the net.

With this recorder to can set it to fit between 1 & 6 hours on one DVD-R.

With my camcorder tapes I us a 90min setting to fit one tape on a full DVD-R to give the best quality.

With VHS tapes I would not go lower than 4 hour mode as the quality is not good below this.

If you have a DV camcorder you could get the E60 with DV in ( not worth the extra from what I hear) or if you have the money the HS2 or E100 with hard drive.

I have the E50 as well.
Top notch and so easy to use the missus has less fear of it than she did the old VHS.
I record digital (DV) camera movies onto -R all the time, but I decided against the extra expense of the `fire-wire` offered by the E60.
I use an S-VHS connection, which is extremely good.
You don`t seem many people complaining about the E50 on here.
Some have their own alternative preferences, but not many actually report problems.
