Confirms they`re just not worth it in my view.
I still prefer the brilliance and picture quality of a traditional CRT set.

I`ve only seen them in a Curry`s superstore, but even when making sure you are in the line of fire so to speak the quality still seems way below of my ageing 32" Sony wide screen tv ( we are talking 1st gen here). Based on what I`ve seen, why does anyone buy them.

Simple, for me a question of space, 42" of plasma on my wall, with appx 3" showing, and all the dvd and home theatre stuff on a small table below it, - or a massive 32" monster tv set - as far as half life is concerned, based on my viewing habits, its lucky if its on more than 5 hours a day, more on the weekend granted - so not a problem, and i never keep tvs more than 3 or 4 years anyways.

Only downside is that watching sky through it is total crap really, picture quality is totally variable depending on the bitrate they use i suppose, but slap in a dvd and its brilliant, glad i got it, glad i paid for what i got, cheaper than moving house just to get a bigger lounge!!

I never liked plasma until i saw a HDTV demo at the CES show.It blew my mind.Ok they only last 60k hours or so but even then they are good.At the moment i have a jvc dhvhs
recorder to watch hdtv films,a zinwell reciver to recieve HDTV broadcasts from www.euro1080i.com and thinking of ordering a jvc grhd1 HD camcorder from the states.I have been a crt fanatic for many years changing my tv at least every 3 years.But i bought a panasonic pw5 and its the best tv ive ever had.Dvds are brilliant.Sky is crap though so we cant have everything.

In equal measures, this smacks of scaremongering and `tunnel vision`.

Ok, so plasma tv has a shorter shelf life than CRT, but can CRT boast 1080p Progressive? No. Can CRT boast at least 42" screen size? No. Can CRT boast a slim and space saving frame, (a massive selling point for MANY people), No. Can CRT offer spotless geometry? Absolutely NO!!

The information is all relative in my opinion. If it was me i`d recommend that Jo Punter go out and buy a nice PJ with 8ft screen - but, back in world reality, the standard domestic environment doesn`t have the room or the versatility to fit a massive purpose built screen and PJ in one room. So, people turn to a Plasma or LCD to get the big screen experience whilst at the same time saving space.

CRT is far from perfect. The last few years have seen QC drop to an atrocious level. The horror stories about all the big name sets from Sony, Toshiba, Philips, Leowe, Panasonic and Thompson all show that buying a CRT is not a foolproof and trouble free experience like it used to be. There`s no reason why a Plasma cannot give you at least 3 years of trouble free viewing, going on an article that even says itself that it is based on hearsay is just plain daft. I know many happy Plasma owners who`ve had their panels well over 2 years and are still enjoying fuss free viewing, so in essence the article is ignoring the fact that at it`s core, CRT will sadly become a dying format. We`re NEVER going to see HD on a conventional set in the UK now, LCD and Plasma are the ONLY ways short of a a PJ and seperate screen to see DVD in pristine HD format.

For many, that small fact is more than enough to convert them. I`m not saying the article is wrong, but some of these `critics` need to get into the real world and speak to Jo Punter and not gawky lab technicians who pick at the smallest, almost unnoticable detail. These writers forget for the most part, that for the buying public, ignorance is bliss, and a slight `wear and tear` issue after so long isn`t going to faze them. CRT can be just as faulty, nothing is perfect ;)

I think you`re missing the point, Westy. If I`m buying a £300 CRT telly from Tescos, I`ll happily put up with the idiosyncrasies, and I won`t be too upset if it blows up in four years` time.

If I`m spending nearly ten times that amount, however, I think I`m entitled to expect something approaching perfection. :D

Although "perfection" is an elusive thing, I would expect not to have to change my TV every 3 years or so at those sort of prices, particularly when other more essential things make demands on my savings.
