I have a Philips DVDR-1000 that will play cd`s and cd-r`s but displays the message "NO DISC" when a DVD or DVD+RW is inserted, have tried upgrading firmware but did not cure the problem, any ideas anybody??

Your DVD1000 has the usual Philips problems.

It needs a new laser unit and will have to go to Philips for repair.

My R1000 has similar problems.

It often refuses to play Region 2 DVD`s at all (even thought it is a Region 2 and was bought with a Region 1 hack). Continues to play Region 1 ok and DVD+RW`s recorded from the TV, but R2 either come up "No Disc" or it spends ages spinning around before it eventually ejects the DVD.

It`s currently running the latest Philips firmware also. If the DVD player is left unplugged for about 24 hours it will play Region 2 DVD`s again for a few days.

If it needs a new laser unit do Philips do this free of charge if the 12 month warranty has expired. It was purchased in Jan 2003.

If you bought the DVDR1000 new from a UK retailer and you have the receipt, then you you need to return the recorder to the retailer and they will send it to Philips for repair.

Philips extended the warranty to 2years after all the problems these units have had.

Thanks, it`s being returned to the retailer on Monday where it will then go off to Philips for repair. How long is reasonable for a repair of this nature??

It will take about 2 or 3 weeks until you get it back

Incidentally, what is the problem with the laser unit. and what`s the chances of the new unit having the same problems as the one being replaced.
