Buy it now, you won`t regret it. Even if you don`t subscribe you will have a dirt cheap PVR. If you do subscribe then you will have an incredibly clever piece of software which will change the way you watch tele. We have had our one for 15 months at which time we took out a lifetime subscription for £199. At the time this was seen as a bit of gamble because Thomson had just stopped supplying the boxes. However, I will break even on the monthly £10 subscription in just 5 months time and there is no sign of the listings being cut off any time soon.

On the other hand, if you don`t like it, you will still be able to sell it on ebay for a profit. I know that I would pay you more than £75 for it.

Well worth paying the sub (very limited without it) - it will totally revolutionise your TV viewing patterns - I rarely watch anything "live" anymore, esp. footie matches which I am perenially watching on 30 minutes delay (to enable me to FF through half time - good on days like today when Sky had three matches one after the other).

Would like to know if the Tivo can record a program if the record button is pressed manually.I assume the sub is for the timed recording function, listings etc??

Yes, that is correct. Without a sub, you can still use it as a basic recording device, or pause live TV. For more information on this sort of thing, search the UK forum at www.tivocommunity.com

Just to raise the other issue, I was only thinking the other day that Tivo is one of the most unusual pieces of AV equipment ever, in that it is the only one I can think of that has appreciated... You can still get over £200 for a decent one on Ebay, which is twice what I paid for mine 8)

I`ve got one, came free with the TV a coupla years ago....love it.

Never got the subs, but can pause TV & record, also FFW and RW.

Whats the point of subscribing, what are the benefits, isn`t just a glorified video recorder, it can do that without the subs. Shame you can`t watch one channel and record another, like Sky Plus.

The simple fact is you never have to watch live TV again so you can schedule your own viewing, or have to put up with commercial breaks.

You never have to remember to record each episode in a series as you can set up a Season Pass so Tivo does it for you automatically.

Oh, and you get programme information up to two weeks ahead at a time, plus it also detects any new channels added to your cable box automatically (NTL never actually tell you they`ve added something)

Coupled with Freeview, ntl cable and a lovely old analogue video recorder, Ihave all bases covered. Something on Sky ? Let Tivo record it whilst I watch Freeview.....you get the picture.

Tivo remains the best purchase I ever made - only paid £99 for mine :)

It` s basically what Sky Plus is then, though it relies on an analogue connection to Sky/Freeview/Cable/ any external source for it`s input? Does it have an EPG for all of the formats? That must be a nightmare to navigate around

I remember looking at it when it came out, but didn`t like the idea of `subscribing`. I know it caught on in America, but it died flat on it`s backside here. What is the availablity of spares like now as they`ve not made them here for years?

I ask the above because there is a little electrical shop near me has one of these on display-it`s been there for months, and it`s now down to what I`d call `A Steal`, especially as it comes with a lifetime subscription (I assume with that being offered, they are transferable between owners?) .

I don`t need it as I use the Auvion PVR for hard disc recording outside of Sky and Freeview (I`ve got Sky+ and a Pace Twin for those), but if it has an easy recording in a similar way to Sky +, then I`d buy it for my parents who constantly struggle with programming their VCR!

Emily, I used to have a Tivo but gave it to some friends when I got Sky+. I wanted Sky+ for various reasons unrelated to Tivo and still think Tivo is a wonderful device. A Tivo has to be plugged into a phone line so that it can dial up overnight to get the latest epg. The epg is MUCH better than Sky`s. It is 2 or 3 weeks in advance and gives more detail.

You are correct that it is analogue input (via scart) so it can take Sky, Freeview.

There is one integrated EPG. I only had Sky at the time so cannot comment on how it integrates both Sky and Freeview. Normal analague channels appeared below 101 and Sky channels started at 101.

If the one you`ve seen is cheap and includes the lifetime sub, I`d say you cannot go wrong getting it for your parents. I`d say it is not quite as easy to use as Sky+ but is still very easy. As far as I know, there is no problem getting spares direct from Tivo but it is well supported on the web so I`m sure it is easily fixed if it ever goes wrong.
