Second SKY box/subscription question

bowfer (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 18th March 2004, 10:41

Looks like I`ll have to bite the bullet and get SKY upstairs as well.
They want £99 for the additional box + £50 installation + £15 a month for the extra subscription.
If I source a second box myself, will they throw their toys out of the pram and charge me more for the subscription ?
I`m pretty sure I can source a box for less than £99 !!!

Oh,another thing as well.
I haven`t had the living room box connected to a phone line for years.
Will they expect the `new` upstairs box to be connected to a phone line ???
That would be difficult and could scupper the whole thing.

I`ve got a spare Pace box + 2no Sky remotes you can have for £50 if you`re interested?

Might get back to you on that if the answers to my previous questions are successful !

Well, you don`t have to buy a new box from them in order to get the second subscription for £15 - any old digibox will do.

However, they do expect both boxes to be connected to the same phone line, so they can verify that they`re both being used at the same address.

Don`t forget about the dish requirements - if you don`t want a second dish, you`ll need to fit a dual output LNB on your existing dish.

Cheers
I knew about the 2nd LNB.
Plugging either SKY box into the phone simply is not practical in my house.
The existing living room box,and the proposed bedroom box,are both at diagonally opposite corners of their respective rooms from the nearest phone points.
I`m fussy about cables, and I`m not having any run across rooms.

As a matter of interest, what`s to stop me plugging in an extension phone lead for the duration of the engineer`s installation, then unplugging it forever after that ???

Nothing I would think. My Digibox was plugged into the phoneline when I first got it about 4 years ago , but has been unplugged pretty much all the time ever since (apart from the very odd occasion when I have ordered a Box Office movie).
As I recall , the `phone line thing` was a condition for the first twelve months , but was in return for what was called at the time the `Interactive Discount` (i.e. free box).
As you would be paying for the second box , no such discount or condition would apply.

It`s a bit risky, as they do check up on it. Unlike the "first 12 months" thing, this has nothing to do with an interactive discount - it`s basically to ensure that the second box is in your house, and not at a mate`s house for example!

yeah, I thought I`d do that and just disconnnect my second box after installation, but two months later got a letter from Sky saying I had to keep both boxes connected at all times or pay full price for my second subscription
