Help with DTS!!!

Simon24 (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 8th April 2004, 08:01

I am a newbie and have a question.

Does my amp need to to have a DTS decoder to play a DTS DVD on a DTS compatible DVD player? Is there another way of playing it by bypassing the amp.

Thanks

Firstly, if a DVD is labelled DTS, it doesn`t mean that it contains only DTS - it will invariably have a Dolby Digital soundtrack as well.

That aside, "DTS compatible" on a DVD player means that it can output a raw DTS signal via the digital outputs. You still need an amp or other device which can decode that signal.

Some players have in-built DTS decoders, but they are very much in a minority. The other way is to use a stand-alone DTS decoder which sits between the player and the amp, but these are scarce and unlikely to be cheap.

If your existing amp can`t decode DTS, I`d just stick with Dolby Digital until you can afford to buy a new one.

Nooo.., sell you mum, wife, children or all of them to get an amp with DTS. You need to get DTS beacuse it`s amazing and adds loads... (note: sarcasm)
If you`ve got an amp without it and are happy with it then fine. DTS is a feature to look for when upgrading but I wouldn`t upgrade simply to add it..
