Mustek PL 407

kaad (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 14th July 2004, 17:45

Hi,

I am considering the purchase of a Mustek PL 207 portable DVD, which with case is about £190.

I have today seen the Mutek PL 407 however at Toysrus, which is about £160 with a case. It seems slightly thicker and heavier, but looks very similar specification wise.

Does anyone have any experience of the 407 or know what the major differences are compared to the 207?

I cannot find a multi-region hack for it - although Mustek support "suggested" that it may work with the 207 hack - I am a bit reluctant to purchase it without being sure if it will play R1 discs.

Thanks

Hey Kaad.

I, too, am considering purchasing the 407...it looks a fairly good deal. Apparently, the 407 is not multi-region out-of-the-box, & Toys R Us are unaware of any hack available at present.

If you have a dvd re-writer you can get around this problem as it definitely plays back-up discs. I tried one today at my local store.

Glad you could get the store to connect one up - I had no such luck !

I was just thinking about whether copying the disks would work - now you have confirmed it. What was your copy on - +R or -R? I was probably going to do this anyway as the kids will probably not take great care of them in the back of the car.

Looking at the hack codes the same code seems to work for the 207, 305 and 408 - which is TURN ON PLAYER - CLOSE DOOR (WITH NO DISK) - SETUP -PRESS NEXT - PRESS PREVIOUS - PRESS NEXT - PRESS PREVIOUS - USING LEFT & RIGHT CONSOLES TO CHANGE CODE THE CODE FOR REGION FREE IS 255 - PRESS SETUP - PRESS SETUP AGAIN - PRESS PLAY)

You would hope that the 407 and 408 would be similar - but only a test will confirm this.

Hi Kaad.

The back-up disc I tried in the store is a Maxell +RW, which appeared to work perfectly well. The reason I want this little machine is for an upcoming holiday and, like yourself, I don`t want to be taking the original discs with me.

Hopefully, I should be going to my local store to pick one up later today.

I bought the PL 407H form Toysrus today for £159.99 and so far it is excellent. It comes complete will 12V adaptor, mains adaptor, battery and a Mustek branded carry/car mounting case.

As well as standard discs it has played a DVD+R and the following handset hack converts it to multiregion:

TURN ON PLAYER - CLOSE DOOR (WITH NO DISK) - SETUP -PRESS NEXT - PRESS PREVIOUS - PRESS NEXT - PRESS PREVIOUS - USING LEFT & RIGHT CONSOLES TO CHANGE CODE THE CODE FOR REGION FREE IS 255 - PRESS SETUP - PRESS SETUP AGAIN - PRESS PLAY)

I have also purchased a 12V FM Modulator from www.allcam.co.uk - this plugs into a 12V car socket and the headphone output of the player - then it transmits the DVD sound on an FM frequency that you can tune your car radio to - a little bit of background noise on quite passages, but overall a very neat gadget for just under £12.

Hi Kaad.

I bought one yesterday, and what a fantastic piece of kit it is. The hack works fine, too. Just one question; does your mains adapter get fairly hot when in use?

Very interested in this, but there are no specs on the ToysRUs website. Can anyone summarise the main differences between this and the PL207, which I had been considering? I can`t seem to find out very much about the 407.

Right, to answer my own question!!
The 407 is heavier (950g as opposed to the PL207 which is 700g).
Also the 407 is 40.6mm deep, whereas the 207 is 28mm. The other dimensions of the 407 are very slightly bigger. I presume it`s an older model.
The 207 claims to have an anti-shock system and a slightly better battery life (lithium ion as opposed to NIMH).
Otherwise I can`t see any major differences.
The PL207 can be bought for about £165 online, but it doesn`t come with the travel case.
I`d be interested if anyone else has any views on the comparative merits of the different models.
Also might be worth checking out the Allcam website mentioned earlier. They say they used to sell Musteks, but reckon that they`re not that reliable, and they prefer a Shinco model, which has a better screen resolution, but it`s about £200 without the case.
