Home cinema problem

Just Some Ugly Ass Dude (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 31st July 2004, 12:37

Hey, Just Wondering if anybody here has the Sony HTDDW750 home cinema Kit and could help?

Well here`s my problem, I got one for Christmas and during the quiet moments of movies you can hear the sub woofer make a slight humming noise and it`s quite annoying. has anyone else experienced this? I think it must be the transformer in the sub (you see the sub has a seperate plug) but should it be making a noise?

if anyone has this model could they switch there`s on to see if there`s make`s a noise?

Thanks.

Is it there on every film? Is it an active subbie? Can you adjust any settings on the subbie itself? How loud is the humming noise and is it there when no dvd is present or if you play a cd? :/

The humming noise is load enough to annoy me.

The sub-woofer has a separate power source (plug) so it doesn't use the power of the amp, so I`ve plugged it in at a different location away from everything else, yet it still makes the humming sound.
It`s probably the transformer in the sub what's making the noise but should it be making a sound at all, or is it just badly designed?

If it hums or buzzes when it`s plugged in to the mains and not connected to your amp then it is a problem with your sub-woofer. Make sure that it is earthed correctly. Isolate the unit and try it on it`s own in another room.Has this problem been there from new? If it has just developed then I would suggest getting the thing replaced under warranty. ;)

I`ve also got a Sony HTDDW750 that I bought last October. The sub woofer has exactly the same problem as described. I`ve had it checked out at two Sony approved repair centres. The first of which said there was no problem end of story. The second place I took it to admitted there was a definite hum that shouldn`t be there. They even replaced the transformer but this made no difference. The guy told me that basically the transformer in the sub was very cheap and was typical of the poor components that SONY use. I am now looking to buy another Sub Woofer as the humming in the background drives me mad and spoils the whole `Home Cinema` experience! >:(

Finally someone else with the problem, it`s so god damn annoying isn`t it?
The sound is brilliant when you watching a action film or anything with constant music playing in the background but as soon as your watch a really story driven film, all you can hear is that f*cking stupid p*ssing noise >:( , it drives me mad!

And also you can't have the volume very low which is also very, very annoying. Bloody thing!

I expected better from Sony >:(

Also when they changed the "Transformer" why didn`t they put a better quality one in?

They said that under warranty they could only replace like for like >:( .
Needless to say SONY are no longer my preferred supplier. The moral of the story is you only get what you pay for. I`m now looking to buy a new sub that won`t have background hum. I suppose that reinforces the ideal of buying seperates.

The tight sods.
I paid £300 for mine, and I don`t think it`s that cheap seen as though my friend bought this one, and it`s doesn`t "HUM" when it's switch on :/ it`s pretty good for it`s price, and it supports DTS.

P.S. When you find another sub to buy, I will get the same one as well and hopefully the bloody thing won`t "HUM" like this little ba*tard!
