SACD connection

Fertnig (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 16th November 2004, 18:34

Please help...I know I`m utterly useless but I always get good advise from this forum. I just had my PIONEER 575a Dvd player delivered today and I`ve tried to hook it up to my Sony STR DB795. I get the Sound from a DVD and ordinary CD via the optical connection yet not a sound from a SACD disc. When I hook it up to ordinary phono plugs then I the sound from the SACD. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong. Is it the DVD player that I need to refer to in the menu.

Chances are your Sony amp can`t decode SACD`s, but the DVD player can. That`s certainly the case with my Pioneer 565a and Yamaha amp.

Assuming you`ve got the full 5.1 speaker set-up, you`ll probably need to invest in 3 pairs of phono-phono leads and use the 6-channel phono out sockets on the dvd player, and hook them up to the equivalent inputs on the amplifier. The amp will have an input selector option of "6 Channel Input" or something along those lines, which you`ll need to select, and you`ll be flying.

Incidentally, the 30th anniversary re-release of Dark Side Of The Moon is absolutely amazing in SACD, if you don`t already have it.

You`re not doing anything wrong. Check page 22 of the manual on the right hand side of the page, 5th paragraph down it says:

"SACD is only available through the analogue outputs"

You will also need to use the analogue outputs to get full resolution audio from DVD-Audio,but standard DD or DTS 5.1 will still go through the optical output. You will need to alter the DVDA settings in the menu to get the DVDA screen to appear when you load a DVDA,otherwise a DD/DTS screen will appear.
The move to ensure the full res sound did not go through the standard digital output was to counter piracy

Yes. I checked page 22 of the manual. Thanks for that. Just to ask that when I play a SACD dics my Amp automatically senses the audio but only plays it through 2 channels. I have to alter the sound mode ie Neo DTS music to get the sound surround. Does your amp automatically play SACDs through all six speakers or it it normal that hen you paly aSACD you get 2 channel sound and its up to you to alter the sound mode. Do I make sense or am I still all confused. I DO APOLOGISE if I

DTS Neo is DTS`s version of pro logic II so you are still not getting SACD multi channel.

Can your amp do SACD?

All the best,

The 42%er.

It`s not easy being different. It`s not easy being cool....but somehow I manage....

You are using the 6-channel output from the DVD, aren`t you? You`ll need 3 pairs of phono leads (6 connections, one for each channel) and use the 6-channel input on the amplifier.

Yes the amp has a dedicated digital and analogue input to be fed from the DVD/SACD player. I WILL NOW ENDEVOUR TO connect the 3 sets of phono plugs mro, 6 channels out puts of the DVD players into my amp. and I;ll see what happens. Again thanks for you help and patience. Both answers will help me.

My setup is that for SACDs I use the 6-phono connection (my Yamaha receiver can`t decode SACD so it`s the only option available) but for DVD sound I use a digital coaxial connection and let the receiver do the decoding.

Bear in mind that when you use the 6-phono connection, the receiver won`t recognise it as being a SACD. It just amplifies the 6 channels that are fed into it by the player, which has already separated the channels out. It should sound different (and superior) to the simulated surround that you`ve been getting so far.

Good luck!

Just because its aSACD does not mean you will get anymore than 2 channel playback. Many older albums like Michael Jackson and The Police are still only in stereo.Makes the upgrade a bit pointless,as its pretty difficult to justify going from CD to SACD and still only having stereo.
