E55 only responding to top and bottom 3 rows of remote control keys

Steve T (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 7th December 2004, 00:23

After two months of smooth functioning, our remote control for our Panasonic E55 DVD-Recorder has gone on the blink. At the moment, only the top 3 rows of buttons, and the bottom 3 rows are working. Unfortunately, these don`t include the main menu buttons for setting the timing, reviewing and deleting contents of the disk and other useful features. There are a handful of buttons on the machine itself to play and ff/frwd, but little else. Our RAM disks are filling up and we can`t clear any space.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have powered the machine off for a few minutes, but to no good effect. I`d be grateful for any useful suggestions...

Turn on a radio and make sure it is set to AM and then tune in between stations so it is hissing, then hold your remote near the radio and press the keys that do work and you should hear a clicking from the radio, press the keys that dont work and if you hear no clicking or if it`s very quite then it`s your remote, try new batteries and if that does not work then get on to who you bought it from and also try Panasonic UK as well, you could also check that none of the buttons are stuck down and that nobody has dropped it or spilt liquid on to it.

The remote is the weak point with the E55 I have seen better with £30.00 DVD players,to be honest it`s a peice of crap.

After changing the batteries, if it still doesn`t respond, try going to page 14 of your manual and try resetting up the remote.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions - the working buttons made the beep with the radio, the dead buttons made no noise, so definitely the remote has a problem and the batteries are OK. Can`t work the remote through the set-up commands, even if do it purely by the book. Having to resort to buying new remote from Panasonic store for £25. Bit of a damn shame. :(

I take it you checked it wasn`t switched to command something else, say a TV?

And you had to buy a remote? For an 85??
I might be wrong, but I thought that had been on the market less than a year, hence it should be covered under guarantee?

Jimbo is right if you have only had it two months then your are still coverd by the guarantee, also make sure you have not got the EXT LINK turned on the remote ( bottom row far left) it gave me some trouble the other day thought the machine had froze but ext link had been turned on.
