Liteon 5045 from SVP

enigma (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 1st January 2005, 18:05

Have just bought the Liteon 5045 HDD recorder from SVP Communications for £349.99 inc PP. Ordered it on 28th Dec and received it on 30th. A most excellent service, I would thoroughly recommend them. It seems a very good machine for the money, way ahead of the opposition for price and formats supported. Although I am still trying to get to grips with all of its features, I have managed to make it multi region.
Switch on player without disc in tray
Press setup
Highlight exit then press 2,9,6,0
Press right and press enter on "region 2"
Press right arrow again and select "0"
Then exit
:)

It would be an *excellent* machine for the price, but its reliability - due to firmware bugs - lets it down somewhat. I got my 5045 from SVP too and they delivered it very quickly as well (free postage - hooray). Note that I believe that new firmware (not the current 191-UK version that`s on the official Liteon site) is due out soon some time this month (Jan 2005) that should hopefully address most of the bugs.

Don`t hold your breath, see THIS LINK for a post with 130 responses listing why this is not a good buy.

Well, their QA (quality assurance) department is either non-existent or stocked by a dead chicken, based on the number of firmware bugs present in the 5045 I have, so you could always apply there

I have a LiteOn 5006 and its got bugs and the latest firmware has not fixed the issue. See THIS LINK for 430 posts complaining about issues with this model.

The Sony GX3 or GX7 seem to be the best recorders right now (read above links from ex-LiteOn owners. Also see January edition of What HiFi magazine (UK best selling home hi-fi / home cinema mag))

Hambrook,

Your post Heading refers to the LVW-5045, but the link you point to is with regard to the 5006.

Just pointing it out.

Cheers,

Dear Hambrook,
sorry to hear you are not a happy user of the 5045.

Although a firmware update is needed, I still think its a very complete prodoct with great specs for a good price
