What about Rotel 985 and Yamaha S-700 ?

Voltaire (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 15th May 2001, 00:21

Does anyone have informations about these 2 dvd players ?
I have "good" offers for each (£300 for Rotel and £200 for Yamaha) from a serious retailer. Those models are not anymore in the current catalog of Rotel and Yamaha. They were at more than £600 each.

Is anyone a good choice compared to a Pioneer 535 for instance ?
Are they hackable ?
Any opinion appreciated.

Thanks.

Bought a Rotel 985 to replace my Pioneer 535 DVD and Rotel CD.

It is superb - better picture and sound than the Pioneer and, the big test, better sounding than the Rotel CD.

I thought I had a bargain at £400 - you won`t be disappointed! - only downside that I have seen is the lack of RGB/Scart out - it has to be connected via S-vhs. Don`t worry about a drop in picture quality - there isn`t any but I do find it a bit less convenient in my own Hifi/AV set up.

Don`t think I`ll be changing it until I can afford the new 995!

Yamaha S-700 is a Panasonic A350 with a different badge. A bit long in the tooth now I would have thought. Have a look at the new Toshiba 210, as far as I am aware it is being sold ready chipped for around £200-00. At least you will have up to date technology.
