Wharfedale M5 - Any reviews out there?

Stephen Tadman (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 24th May 2001, 11:15

I am looking ot get a DVD player and lots of friends have the Wharfedale 750/750S and seem pretty satisfied with it.

Since Tesco/Wharfedale no longer offer this player I am looking at the M5.

At a price point of £170 and multiregion is this the player to go for?

Does anyone know of any reviews for this player out there?

Hi
The Wharfdale 750 and 750s were featured on the BBC`s Watchdog programme because they had a firmware problem. This meant that the 750/750s weren`t able to play certain discs like disc3 in the Toy story gift set and Gladiator disc2. I reciently got in touch with wharfdale and they say that they have upgraded the firmware and will have no problems playing any of these discs and future discs. The 750 did perform well as it got good reviews at www.homecinemachoice.com. The M5 being the successor of the 750 will do just as good if not better-as it has a built in dolby digital and dts decoder.

Tesco`s have run out of the M5 for online shoppers and don`t expect anymore until 26th June 2001.

There is a possibility some stores still stock it on the High Street.

There are mixed reviews over at my site : http://www.area450.co.uk and it seems some of the first batch have drive/laser faults.

The player is actually manufactured by Sampo in Taiwan, but is made to Wharfedale`s spec.
