New Panny DVD Recorder Models

MarkGixer6 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 9th March 2005, 13:11

Since there has been quite a bit of discussion of the arrival of these new models, I have posted a link to a recent (ish) press release from Panasonic. Looks like it could be May rather than March/April as previously quoted on this site...

http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?storeId=11301&catalogId=13251&itemId=87508&modelNo=Content12302004011220505&surfModel=Content12302004011220505

Actually, I just this second got an email reply from Panasonice to say the DMREH50 will be available April/May, so they are being a little vague on the exact timing. Seems a shame that they`re not available now, because I`ll be out riding my m`bike in most of my spare time, come summer 8)

Before anyone asks me why I`m waiting (Phelings etc) it`s because I already have some ram disks, +R(W) and -R(W), so I do need a player that can use them all. Not loyalty (mislaced or otherwise) to Panasonic....
Cheers
Mark

Well if the panny E55 gets discounted then why not buy one of them, found a site with owners reviews on of different makes.

God the panny comes out well compared to the to the Sony. :) :)

Just read the blurb on the new models.......
Quote:
Improved horizontal resolution in LP mode renders images twice as sharp as last year`s models, delivering up to 500 lines. A new 12-bit analog-to-digital converter provides high bit, high rate sampling to convey even subtle nuances and produce smooth, beautiful recordings with astounding depth

WOW...I can hear phellings crying into is hard drive. :) :) :)

Strange - the sony gets 10/10 from all the people who reviewed it... so I don`t know how that comment can be correct.

P.S. the panny did not get 10/10 from all the people who reviewed it!

I would not question your waiting for these machines. With the traditional Panny quality and the long awaited addition of -RW(and +R)these machines will certainly be the ones to beat.I think I will probably get a HDD model from the range myself as long as the pricing is not too steep.
Whether the improvement in picture quality will be quite as good as the hype remains to be seen.
I`ll keep the Pioneer aswell though.

Indeed. Marketing hype is one thing, reality is another.... BTW Phelings, belated thanks for your advice about not keeping the JVC DRM10 EK. Not having RGB in socket makes a huge quality difference on my tv. Also, the record quality was no better than the Philips DVR70 I have, in fact if anything, I`d say it was very slightly lower quality although it did have much better features. Anyway I sent it back and I`m glad I did. Can`t wait to get rid of the Philips though as it`s the most user unfriendly peice of hardware I`ve ever bought. The remote is so illogical it drives me mental...Anyway rant over.

Glad to be of service.Philips remotes(and onscreen interfaces) always seem awkward compared to other makes. But I put this down to their European origins,as opposed to the Japanese stuff which seems fairly standard and logical.Philips persist in making the FF and REW keys the same as the CHAP SKIP ones by holding them down, which is awful to use.And with either 4x or 32x speed, one is too slow and the other is too fast.
Seeing as the other thread is closed we can continue the debate on here.
GCXboy,I have never tried to say that -RW(VR) is any more compatible than RAM,it isn`t.All I ever point out is the -RW option of creating a compatible VIDEO mode disc that is not possible on RAM.Thats all I ever say and it develops into a slanging match because Paull (and some others) can`t stand to see anything negative about RAM>please note that Mr Editor(moderator).
GCXboy-I am interested in your comments about some -RW blanks not being able to record in VR.Where is this info from. With Panny`s track record of rejecting some cheap -R discs, now might be a good time to see if -RW causes similar problems on other machines/drives,so that once these new Panny`s arrive, people don`t waste time and money having to experiment as they did with -R in the early days.

You don`t know the size of the hard disk on this model do you? I posted a question on it a few days back but nobody seems to know.
I`ve mailed Panasonic but got no reply. Great Customer Service....
Looking around the web it varies from 80GB, 100GB to 200GB.

Although there seems to be links in various places I have not even looked a the Panny machines yet.Often, reported specs(like the link above) refer to the US models which nearly always differ to the one we get, usually with us getting a smaller HDD.
But I would think 80Gb will be the smallest, and who knows what the largest will be.What Video reports the new Tosh 34 will be 250Gb and only £299 from some retailers, although those that have contacted Tosh say its 160Gb.
In Japan Tosh do a 600Gb model,so I would expect at least a 250Gb one from Panny. But the most important thing to determine if this new range will be a runaway success, which it certainly has the potential to be,is the price. If Tosh do even a 160Gb at £299,then having +R as an extra may not be enough. As most other makes already offer RAM and -RW together it will be the compromise of price and HDD capacity that decides it.
I`m waiting for an official announcement with specs and prices before deciding
