Page 1 of URGENT REQUEST Panasonic DMRE65EBS OWNERS The manual says -R discs record ONLY in 4:3 aspect

On page 16 of the manual it says -r disc`s only record in 4:3, NOT 16-9 wide-screen?

Is this true or a manual error ?

If true, what do they do, only record the 4:3 section of the frame, or do they record wide-screen as a letterbox, i.e. with black bars top and bottom.
Their is no mention of this on their web site.

EDIT: This is the offending bit of page in case I have got so befuddled that I`m misreading it.

If true, its going back, its BL**DY useless to me like that

don`t know if this is of any help but, my panny e55 does 16:9 on dvd-r by default :)

Haven`t taken it out of the box yet after reading the manual and this little bombshell.
Have to decided if I keep or return it. It seem daft, but with dvd recorders manufacturers, you never know what daft thing they will add or leave out.

Just bumping this to the top of the page.

It may have been for `What Video Widescreen TV` a best buy in their Aug 04 issue,
but if this is true it should have a ruddy great warning sticker on it.

I`m sure mine records in 16:9 with DVD-R. I`ll check tonight for you.

It is likely that what this means is that the widescreen flag won`t be saved onto the disc - the content will probably be recorded 16:9 and will playback 16:9 - but you may need to manually set your TV to widescreen mode rather than the DVD doing this for you automatically.

My E85 does this as well. Pictute is recorded as 16:9 Anamorphic but you need to manually set your TV to widescreen.

JSG, yep, that`s what I`m hoping will be how it works out. Otherwise it is just plain DAFT, and criminal for panny to only mention this in the manual.

I just did what I should have done to start with and rang Panasonic and asked them, and they have confirmed what you all have said. No 16-9 flag recorded, which drops me in it with regards to the disc`s I send to my sister as her sony dvd player will not add black bars top and bottom to my recording unless I set my sky box to display that way. Leaving me to have to zoom in on the tv to get 16-9 on anything I record for both of us. Decisions, decisions. please refer to the small print below.

Whats this "recording broadcasts that allow one copy" about? :)

Dunno, another weid Panasonic idea I think.

I`ve always found hooking up the dvd player to the recorder is fine for copys of home made dvd`s ;)
