what can cause a coloured patch on tv screens -
besides a magnet. can a standard electrical socket cause it,because it is intermittent so it cant be the built-in speakers?
RE: what can cause a coloured patch on tv screens -
Is it a widescreen tv? Some of them don`t like still pictures (like dvd menus) and can cause patches like that (i found that the "Snatch" dvd menu really affects my tv). In this case, its nothing to worry about, just play the disc or turn the tv off then on again and it will be fine.
If you dont think its this, i would get it sorted quickly (otherwise it can be permanently damaged). You could try removing all magnetic sources nearby and keeping the tv off for a few hours, which is what you are meant to do if there is any speaker interference.
Hope any of this helps.

it is widescreen but the patch is only visible during 4:3 picture modes and comes and goes. thanks anyway.

just a thought but if your using an amp thats too close to the set it has the same effect because the transformers act as electric magnets. I moved my amp and it cured it for me

apart from mushrooms and excessive Jack Daniels `n` Coke,
try moving every electrical item (within reason) as far away from the
TV as possible.
