Slow torrent dl speeds on Tiscali

geordiepaul2005 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 26th June 2005, 19:28

Hi,
I have been recently downloading music etc from various torrent sites, but off late my speeds have dropped to 1 - 3 kb/s.
This coincides with Tiscali telling me I have reached my 15gb limit, but I can pay for each additional gig so this should not affect it.
Any ideas??

But have you paid? Do they revert you to dial up speeds until the next month starts?

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

the cost gets added to my direct debit, and therefore it should still be normal speeds

Try using BITSPIRIT as your torrent client....it seems to be the fastest out of all i have tried.

Probably get another b*llocking from the moderators here for discussing Bit Torrent, but what the hell, you could be downloading legally..

Change the port your BT client works on-most are set to the BT defaults, but you can open any port (or range of ports) instead. I choose a port in the upper 40000`s. Why? well it`s reported that some ISP`s put a choke on the default ports to keep the traffic down. Most-if not all- of them will claim that is rubbish, but I can only speak as I find-I get far faster access when I don`t set my ports to the standard one(s)

If you do change it-make sure you change it in your firewall (and in your router config if you have one) otherwise you will not be able to do get `green lights`.

I have tried changing the ports etc but the speeds don`t seem to change at all.
I have read on another forum that Tiscali do limit the speeds once you pass your limit, though there must be a way around this.

tiscali are known for putting "heavy" users on a limited connection. The did it to a friend last year, within 48 hrs of connection as he downloaded 700Mb. :-( (and that was all service packs and the like !!!!); From memory, there call centre is someware in the middle east, and they cannot fix your speed as it`s automatic by the system.

Prehaps you should have a look at www.adslguide.org.uk and see what`s going on. Without starting a flame war, there are alot better ISP`s around.

(I used them several years ago, the free POTS access did not work on all web sites, only the chargable POTS access gave full (and faster) access).

Make the most of it, guys. This latest Supreme Court decision looks like consigning P2P to history.

Yes, yes I would do it.
Such power would put me among the Gods!!

They ruled that Grokster can be held responsible for the data that is transferred using its software and servers.

So owners/writers of illegal P2P programs may see it as too risky to continue allowing people to use them.
