In Car Sat Nav

snappyone (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 13th July 2005, 10:12

Dear All,

I am trying to help a friend find a good in car sat nav system. Does anyone have any experience of them or recommend any in particular. It needs to be easy to use with a reasonable size screen.

Many Thanks

I use a PDA in conjuction with a Bluetooth GPS receiver & free (well actually demo maps for time life* of 9 days) software from Mapopolis.

Setup could resemble something like this using a SDIO card instead of a BT GPS receiver, I power both my Zodiac & Fortuna GPS unit from a power lead for the GPS\Dell PDA (but modified for the Tapwave).

Full voice prompt etc etc etc.

You have just reminded me to go get some more maps of the Toronto area for my hols. :)

*The life can be extended by rolling back the date on the PDA before use or by sticking the maps on a SD card card & transferring to a new PDA (or clean built).

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.

I recently bought a Mitac Mio 168 PDA with TomTom 5, can highly recommend it, very easy to use, just enter a postcode and house number and it will take you straight to the door! It`s cheaper than a stand alone TomTom and you get a PDA :D .

Have stuck loads of games on mine to waste away the hours stuck in travelodges all over the country and also have installed a speed/redlight camera program on it so as your driving along it warns you as your aproaching a speed camera.

Got it from Global Positioning Systems They were the cheapest at the time and came highly recommended by others on the site here.

Best thing of all is everything is included that you need, car charger, mains charger, USB lead to connect to your computer, in car holder, protective carry case etc

Only thing against it is that the 256Mb memory card will be almost fully used once you have installed TomTom if you choose the full map and postcode system, so worth upgrading to a 512Mb or a 1GB. I also bought a screen protector to go with it.

All the best

Ger.

Great, many thanks for the help with that. I did look at a Navman but found it really awkward and fiddly to use. Does the Milo option have a good size screen and does the sound come via your stereo or the pda,,?
Cheers?

The screen is 3.5" diagonally, practically the size of the PDA and it is a touch screen, the reason I bought the protector for it.

The screen quality is excellent and with the protector installed in stops any glare from the sun.

The sound comes from the PDA, you use the joystick as a volume control, sure it has a setting that automatically increases the volume as your speed increases. It is more than loud enough, scares the life out of you on the motorway when it has been quiet for ages then starts jabbering away.

You also get a load of software bundled with the PDA, such as Outlook, Excel, Word, Internet Explorer and a few games. I have since bought a wireless network card for mine so that I can use it on the internet although it can be a bit odd on some sites due to the size of the screen.

I forgot to say earlier that it has the GPS receiver built in, makes everything a bit neater. They also include a more powerfull external receiver but I have never bothered to use it.

All the best

Ger.

Mate got Median, car and portable unit! for approx. £250.

We went to West Midlands from Berks by programming in post code, spoke to us and displayed map all the way there and could not fault it. It comes with a handle bar adaptor to fix to mountain bike. Runs on memory cards loaded from discs, colour screen, etc I though it was brilliant. (no use for one myself ..............yet!)

I would certainly recommend MEDION!

Good thing is, that you can take it out of the car and put it in your pocket (security).
