Dvd recorders..idiots guide please!

Issac Hunt (Elite) posted this on Monday, 5th September 2005, 17:34

Ludite alert:
I`ve been thinking about getting the Panasonic DMRSE10 (or some other combination of those letters). I will probably be copying miniDV to DVD, so will I need I-link to do this? Does I-link just make it easier to copy or is it essential? What is Firewire? And does the above model have I-link? And finally Esther, does my miniDV need to be `DV in and out` or can you copy from any old thing?
Thanks

I copy from miniDV to a Panasonic E55 ( no firewire )
I just use the 3 phono leads that came with the camera.
Firewire / i-link is just ( I think) a glorified version of events.
Again I stand to be corrected, but I think firewire or i-link maintain the digital connection, whereas my method doesn`t.
Undoubtedly these will give you better pictures and sound.
There`s little wrong with the picture and sound using my dead basic method though.

I don`t know why the Panasonic DMRES10 doesn`t have DV-IN so I could use firewire to get film off my MiniDV camcorder, when cheap DVD recorders like the Yamada DVDR 8400x do have this feature.

That is the only thing putting me off getting the DMRES10.

You can connect your miniDV using the three phono cables that come with the camera or you could buy a DV to S-video cable and use that instead.
I found the three phono results so acceptable that I haven`t bothered investigating other ways of doing it.
My recordings (baby stuff) play perfectly in other people`s players and they`re always impressed by the moving thumbnails of each particular `segment`.

One of Panasonics older models (the E85 i think) have firewire (i link) but the ES10s best camcorder connection is S video.

I don`t have either of the two machines.

I believe that :

The older E55 records only in "-R" & "RAM"

The new ES10 records in -R, -RW, +RW, & RAM.
I wanted to buy the E55,but lack of -RW stopped me from buying it.

I bought the JVC DRM10 which recoreds in -R, -RW & RAM.
I wanted -RW so that I can record and watch it a cheap player & re-record over it after I have seen the first recording.

Almost correct , as along with -R, -RW, & RAM it also records on +R but not +RW.

^ cheers lads. I went for the ES10 (multiregion) - got it on ebay brand new in box. Am well chuffed with it, have just started playing with it today - very easy to use so far, didn`t realise it had videoplus - a bonus :)
