need advice re a VIDEO TAPE recorder !!!

pat-w (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 20th September 2005, 22:27

Yeah, i know video tape is a dirty word round here, (well two dirty words :D ) but my vcr has just died, & I have a lot of pre recorded tapes that i do sometimes watch, so I need to buy a new vcr.

I have a Panasonic DMRE55 DVD recorder & Sky Plus so I can`t see me ever recording on it, its for playback only.

Been looking around, there are a few super vhs players about for the budget I have (Under £100), but as I`m never going to record on the machine, is it worth the extra money for super vhs.

Even looked at player only machines, but they cost as much as the up scale recorders, so can`t see the point of them apart from the fact that they are very small.

Anyone have any advice re super vhs? Will it play the regular vhs tapes with a clearer picture?
Thanks for the help guys I appreciate it

An S-VHS Video recorder will not play back plain VHS tapes any better, unless it is a better quality machine of course.

S-VHS machines will only make a difference on recording.

I have a JVC HR-S6855 S-VHS Recorder which will also record to normal VHS tapes in `pseudo-SVHS` to make it a better recording on normal tape, not that I ever record on it these days.;). I only paid about £80 for this machine about 2 years ago and not used it much.

talkshop, thanks for that.
Ended up buying a JVC S-VHS from e-bay for £58 :)
