DVD Recorder Advice

paulgoth (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 26th September 2005, 13:55

Am going to buy a low end DVD Recorder just to get my old VHS tapes onto DVD. Not bothered about much else (ie recording from TV) as I have Sky +.
Models I am thinking of are :
Ellion DVR-515A
Samsung DVD-R122
Panasonic DMRES10
Pioneer DVR-230-S
All of these are -R compatible as I heard +R gives a lot of problems on other machines.
Did quite fancy the Sony RDRGX210S but have read some really bad reviews.

Anyone got any of these machines or any advice for my purchase ?

paul :)

I myself can only comment on our Lite-On 5005B which uses DVD+/- media.
Manages to record everything perfectly and ,as an added bonus for me anywhooo :) , can create Audio CD`s from our Sky+ box.
Yes there are other units that will be far superior to this one but I can recommend the 5005B, or now the 5006B as excellent units.
Both can record at 1,2,3,4,6 hour settings and I believe the 5006B has a Videoplus facility as well.
Anywhooo :) if a simple unit is all you need then a 5005/6/B would be a good option.

Over to nostalgia for the rebuttal now :D

Any of the other makes you suggested will be superior quality to Liteon, but Liteon seem to be the only ones to provide the very useful extra of cd recording aswell.
I`m surprised other makes further up the quality scale have not decided to add the feature.
If cd recording is something you could use go for Liteon.
If you want a better brand look elsewhere, and if any of your vhs recordings could do with editing go for a model with HDD too.
Transferring lengthy VHS recordings to dvd can be done with less hassle and in a tidier fashion with a HDD.
You can leave your 3 or 4 hour VHS transferring to the HDD,then on your return you can either add chapters at convenient locations,or divide a multiple episode tape into individual episodes, and edit out ads or padding-all before burning the neat and tidy result to dvd .
Discontinued models from Pioneer or Panasonic should be around at £250 which is only £50-£100 dearer than a dvd only model

Yup didn`t take you long to actually spout the usual well informed guff :)

FFS nostalgia, do you ever actually step back and reread some of your dismissive and quite honestly embarassing posts , a good one being Quote:
"I would like to see your cack DVD collection"
from a few months back.
The man only asked for recommendations that would allow him to transfer from VHS to DVD and little else and you, as per, dismiss any make other than Pioneer/Panasonic.
Again FFS listen to yourself for a wee while you may get a shock :) .

Try posting helpful and informative posts and I and many others may treat your posts with a little bit more respect, rather than with the contempt many of them actually deserve.

FYI I do actually find the Audio CD creator a great bonus. The ability to create an Audio CD of say a BBC7 show suits me down to the ground. The simple fact that you deem this a tawdry and relatively useless facility is quite honestly neither here nor there. The fact is users enjoy this facility.

The Panasonic DMR ES10 is the best Dvd only recorder, according to What Home Cinema magazine (I own an EH50 which is basically the same recorder, only with an 80gb hard drive)

Choagy, you ought to read your own posts.
He asked for recommendations and thats what he got.You even said my info was well informed ,which it is,but guff it is not.
I believe my comment about your "cack" dvd collection was a reference to the untidy nature of dvd recordings without editing.+RW offers basic editing and a HDD/DVDR combo offers superior features over any DVD only model.
I know it hurts to hear your budget model slated but the truth does hurt.
Having used Philips dvd recorders, aswell as Panasonic and Pioneer HDD/DVDR I am well informed on the differences between the formats and makes of machine. Are you?
I also DID say that cd recording was a useful extra.I`m sorry if its confusing but I can`t make it any plainer.
I will also point out always that unless you MUST keep to a low budget, then for a few pounds more ,Pioneer,Panasonic,Toshiba and others will offer a better machine than any of the DVD+ cheapies.
I won`t say they are bad value, because they are not-but if you want quality you need to pay.
Recommendations are just that.Surely its better to spell out the options for him to make his own decision, rather than listen solely to your continued hype about the Liteon when its the only machine you have used and you will not compare it with others.
I have used models from across the ranges and my opinion is just as important as yours.Just because I offer my opinion does not necessarily mean he will take my advice over yours.
I merely point out different options. You just don`t like me pointing out that your machine is cheap and cheerful. But thats no sin and each to his own.

nostalgiadvd,

You said........

"..... and a HDD/DVDR combo offers superior features over any DVD only model....."

Not if you own an Ellion 950 !
This model allows only - Delete, Dubbing and re-Name Title as so-called editing features on the hard disc.

What a stupid waste of the potential possibilities of a HDD recorder.

Indeed, but when referring to HDD/DVDR combos I tend to mean the quality makes like Pioneer/Panasonic.
Ellion is in the same bracket as Liteon.I don`t know the Ellion model -I assume its another DVD+ dog.
However, you are right about wasting HDD if thats all it offers.
But then, even Sony missed out key editing features on its earlier HDD recorders.
Choagy,I agree Liteon is a low end product, but many punters are unaware of the full capabilities of a HDD recorder, and many are willing to pay what little extra it costs for a vast increase in the features of the machine.
There`s no problem pointing out that for about £250 you can get a quality HDD/DVDR from Panny/Pioneer etc, which is only about £100 extra over a dvd only recorder. Its up to the guy if he feels the extra features are worth the extra cash.Buts there`s nothing wrong in giving him the full picture
