RE: Blu-ray ?????
Thanks for that Chris.
I couldn`t understand how a TV with interlaced scan could display the progressive scan inputed from a Blu-ray player.
Looking at the full spec. it says -
Video
576i
480p
576p
1080i
720p

Blu-ray ?????
Hi all,
My son has recently bought a Sony KDL32V4000 and is now keen to buy a Blu-ray player to go with it.
I don`t see the point of this as the TV scan is (supposedly) 1080i and has only a 32" screen. As I understand it, there is not going to be any great improvement in image quality using a Blu-ray player rather than a DVD player given that the TV most probably has some form of upscaling anyway.
To me, it seems he will just be wasting money especially given the current premium price of Blu-ray players. Am I correct in making this assumption?
Your comments will be most welcome.

RE: New DVD recorder
Thanks Mark.
"Yes, you can pre-edit adverts out on most PVR-DVD recorders"
Most maybe, but not all. I own an Ellion 950C (spit) DVR and this has no editing facility for recordings made to the hard drive - cannot even change the quality setting pre-dubbing to fit a long recording onto a single disk.
That is why I asked specifically about PVR`s. I`m considering getting one (or building one) and don`t want to end up with a similar problem.
.
RE: New DVD recorder
Sue,
Do any of the PVR`s have editing facilities - i.e. if you decide archive a recorded program on an external DVD recorder can you edit out adverts etc prior to burning.
Just to clarify, I`m talking about editing on the PVR not on the DVD recorder.

Philips DVDR3577H HDD recorder
Hi all,
Anyone got any views about this machine.
I recall that the brand was not too well thought of, at least for their early DVD recorders, but wondered if they have improved.
All comments would be welcome.
RE: SEG DVDR500 DVD Video Recorder -
On some some machines there is a `Make Compatable` function for +RW discs but I have found that +RW`s will play on a separate player whether this is used or not.
RE: GDVD301RP - Recorded discs wont play on other DVD players
RTFM
Somewhere in the instruction book it will tell you how to finalise a +R disk. Once this is done it should play on other machines. You don`t have to do this for +RW disks.
RE: PACIFIC AND DURABRAND PICTURE PROBLEMS !!!
Just a wild shot, but did/do you also have an RF cable connected between any equipment ?
If you have it might be worth checking that the shielding/ground is continuous between both ends and that the outer part of the plugs are making good contact with the sockets.

RE: Recording Sky channels
Yup, that`s why I was asking for more info.
RE: Recording Sky channels
Can you be more precise please.
The channels that you cannot record - which ones ?
When you say you cannot record them, do you mean you get no recording at all or that the recording will not play clear, watchable pictures.
RE: Can`t get any video tape inside the VCR (Sony SLV E700)?
I think Zovirax is on the right track.
All of the cassette and tape movements within a vcr are monitored by switches and sensors.
I`m guessing that to get the cassette out you had to manually turn the gears in the loading tray or operate the flywheel - to unthread the tape and raise the tray - and failed to return these to the position they were in. Also, there is usually a sensor which detects if a cassette is in the machine.
I would open it up again, (make sure it is not connected to the power supply) put in a cassette and and operate the the gears/flywheel until the cassette is back in position and the tape fully threaded, and then try to start the machine.
Don`t use exessive force to turn the gears or any part of of the mechanism and don`t switch the power on with the lid off.
Unless you really know what you are doing, plodging around inside live equipment is not a good idea and you do so at your own risk.

RE: Need advice on DVD-recorders (again, sorry)
That`s a good price for the Thomson but I have to admit that I had not really done a comprehensive search, just did a quick check on that one `price shopper` site and the £123 price looked good for that type of machine.
As to your mom`s fear of leaving things plugged in, I think that probably goes back to the time when televisions could sometimes set fire if left connected.
Those days are long gone and all domestic appliances now have to meet stringent safety standards in both their design and manufacture.
I can`t see any way round the update issue other than to try to convince your mom that nowadays it`s ok to leave it plugged in.
If there is a workaround, I`m sure one of the more expert contributers to this board will be able to help.
RE: Need advice on DVD-recorders (again, sorry)
Bit puzzled that you think the Humax is pricey ?
A search on `The Price Guide` yeilds the following :
Thomson DHD 4000 @ ........£199.99 from :
http://www.electricshop.com/invt/4068tho109709a
Humax PVR8000T80 @ .......£122.99 from
http://www.247electrical.co.uk/epages/twentyfourseven.storefront/EN/Product/HUMPVR8000T80?STS=247&source=PriceGuide
I have no idea which is considered to be the better machine for reliability though.
RE: Need advice on DVD-recorders (again, sorry)
If they never archive then how about a PVR with EPG.
From the Humax spec. :
"... The Humax PVR8000T-80GB features a 80GB hard disk and a Freeview tuner to make the ultimate VHS video recorder replacement. Utilising the hard disk you can pause live television, instantly replay events or use the 7 day Electronic Programme Guide* to preset recordings in a flash. ....
Tuner system: Freeview Digital Terrestrial tuner built-in, auto channel find, store
Hard disk: 80GB (approximately 40 hours record time) built in ............
Pause live television, mutli-speed RW/FF/slow motion, instant reply "rewinds" and plays back from the start of the last recording at a single button push, find a channel via number or favourites list or via alphabetical name search
Timer/VideoPlus: Set via EPG, manually, set daily timer or one off EPG & Text: 7 day compatible, set timer via EPG menu - very simple, digital Teletext (MHEG)
Setup: Auto tuner preset, auto clock set
Remote control: Yes
*7 day EPG requires broadcaster to make 7 day EPG schedule available ......."
Sounds like an easy unit to use.
RE: Ignore this one! Inadvertantly clicked mouse and posted blank message
I thought your first post was excellent.
Not a single spelling or grammar mistake and your comments expounded in a most relaxed and transparent manner.
In fact, one of the best attempts seen on this board for a long while.
RE: Worth get an HDD/DVD Recorder?
Yes you can record from a standard Sky box onto DVD or HDD but you will only be able to record the channel that the sky box is tuned to.
As to models to avoid, the only candidate I can put forward is the Ellion 950. This has no worthwhile HDD editing features at all so is best steered clear of.
RE: Videotapes - recycling?
"....Any other ideas on recycling?...."
Charity shop ?
RE: Videotapes - recycling?
Have to agree with images post.
Not only is the media still a little bit suspect, but the hardware also as a read through the older posts to this forum will show.
I`ll be hanging on to my VCR and tapes for a while yet.
RE: DVD Recorder Advice
nostalgiadvd,
You said........
"..... and a HDD/DVDR combo offers superior features over any DVD only model....."
Not if you own an Ellion 950 !
This model allows only - Delete, Dubbing and re-Name Title as so-called editing features on the hard disc.
What a stupid waste of the potential possibilities of a HDD recorder.
.
RE: Matsui dvdr100 set up
Not familiar with that machine but somewhere it should give you a choice of AV inputs when programming or making a recording.
Assuming that you have connected using scart leads (+ RF) choosing to input `Scart` will record whatever is currently on the TV.
RE: can you recommend a RELIABLE dvd recorder
What about Pioneer ?
I don`t see too many negative reports about them on here.
Many folks got one ?

RE: philips 610
Philips probably do.
Have you asked them ?
RE: Is this Panny E55 firmware safe?
As it`s an official Panny site, I would imagine that the firmware is "safe" but how applicable to a UK machine might be another question.
As you have had no joy from the UK team, why not contact the US site and explain your problem and ask their advice ?
There is a contact form at : http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vContactUs?storeId=15001
I`ve done this for other products marketed by international manufacturers and have usually found that the US customer service has been very helpful.
They have a different outlook on service over there compared to our lot - in the US, customers are considered to be important !
Edit :
Just spotted this on that site which might explain why Rob J`s attempt failed :
"......If "U11"(DMR-E30/ DMR-HS2) or "UNSUPPORT" appears on the DVD recorder`s display during the update process, this indicates that the firmware already installed in your unit is either the same version or a newer version than the one you are trying to install. ......"

RE: Is my E55 dying?
Sounds like a firmware `loader` problem.
I don`t know if Panny do F/W updates but if they do, try it.
If not I would contact them and see if there is any way for you to re-load the firmware.
RE: Does RGB Scart transmit sound?
Wot`s a ".....panasonic 32pd 50....." ?
RE: Sky + Hard Disc to DVD
"......There are more protected channels on SKY than you might think, E4, Discovery channels ,,,,,,,,,"
I don`t think so. I have recorded many programmes from different Discovery channels on both tape and DVD and never encountered any macro effects.
Just tried a few minutes of E4 on DVD and it recorded fine.
On one occasion I did try to record part of a Box Office film which we had paid for but had to interrupt late at night and that could not be done on either tape or disc so I know my gear is not macro free.

RE: New replacement DVD remote wont work: Do I need to set something up?
Just out of interest, why did you need a replacement ?
RE: PHILIPS DVD 703 - BLOCKED
Quote:
even tho it it not known why it goes into this mode
I would have thought that the reason it goes into that mode is because it has a fault....i.e. it is not behaving in the manner which it should.
RE: PHILIPS DVD 703 - BLOCKED
Have a look here: http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/forums/thread.asp?Forum=211&Thread=417911
Not the same model but sounds like yours may have the same fault.
RE: Replacement remote for Sony TV
Or here for the best price and del. cost - you will have to telephone them though.
