Page 1 of Subtitles and Mp3 player.For yelo here we go again.

Got my yelo dvd player yesterday as promised. Hooked it up to the tv via the video , disabled macrovision and set it to play multi region. Everything was fine until yes I found the subtitle default. Phoned technical support today at Interdvd who said that they wernt technical aware of the product!! and transfered me to yelo. I spoke to a nice guy at yelo who confirmed that there was a problem and what did I want them to do about it. At first he just said put up with it ( heard that somewhere before) i then asked if there was a firmware upgrade and he then took my details and has promised to call me back next week!! with any further advice. I am happy with the sound and the picture is a complete transformation compared with the scan, although it is a bit pixelated in end of days and City of Angels but it is 100 times improved on scan.

I have tonight found out about a few more problems with the player. It plays cds perfectly even cdrs. However when I loaded a disk of mp3s it plays ok for some of the tracks and then you get a noise coming from the player like a dustbuster vacuum cleaner and then the mp3 track stops or skips. It also does not display all the tracks and shows a ? instead. Why the mp3 disks play fine on the pc i have and thats made by time!!!!! I even had one disk lock inside the player and none of the controls worked to get it out. The only way that I could open it was to unplug the player at the mains and turn it on and off again. Has anyone else experienced this ? Call me sad if you like but the mp3 side of this is important to me in the fact that I need one in my dvd player. I have copied a few disks over to vhs already and they work fine brill in fact. Is there a maximum of mp3s allowed on one disk or something for the yelo to cope with. I do hope yelo can sort this out cos I do not going through it all again!!!! I called again to yelo this evening and they are closed untill Monday. The warranty says that they will only accept back players within the first two days of receipt surely this is incorrect as I thought a warrenty was for a year as was the manufactures garuntee. Help me please. If all else fails will i be any wiser with getting the new wharfdale. I have heard it is macrovision disabled and can play mp3s is this correct and what is the picture pixelation like etc. hELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLP mY wife cant take much more of my tantrums because of the dvd mess!!!!!! most player dont like the use of certain keyboard character`s in the files name, that is why they dont show.

If it is making funny noises swap it for another?

I have not had the `vacuum cleaner` noise you speak of. I thought it could possibly be due to unsupported bitrates, but I have tried a range of bitrates (128, 160, 192, and 256) and have not had any problems. Even tracks with very similar filenames (i.e. the first 20 characters being identical) have played without problems! Are you sure your files are regular MPEG 1.0 layer 3, 44100hz Joint Stereo? Especially as you mention the ? listed tracks.

As for the Wharfedale, I doubt it will be right for you. There were some rumors being banded around about a Macrovision defeat option. But I believe Wharfedale have now publically stated that there is no such facility on their player. Additionally, I think the MP3 playback is rather basic, only playing tracks in the recorded sequence and with no `Explorer` style view or support for long file names.

All in all, if the subtitle problem is the only niggle, then it`s not a bad box of bits for the money.

I getting ready to be shot down in flames, but have you tried setting the Subtitles for an obscure language which is not available on most DVDs, Greek perhaps.
If the subtitles come on and find no Greek subtitles available, perhaps none will show and it`ll be as if subtitle was turned off!

I dont have my Yelo yet (lost/stolen in transit), so I may be (as usual) speaking outta my arse.

Mp3s are always a pain in the arse with these players.Always depends
on compression ratio used,type of media etc.The latest scan batch
shows reduced pixellation on end of days because of a newer mpeg card.
This is the problem with the mpeg card.As with the scan player a
firmware update will not reduce pixellation.Regarding subtitles you couild
set the subtitles to say "arabic" and see what happens.It used to work on some machines but not others.Regarding macrovision,you may see
more and more players without this disable function.Our next scan batch
will actually be inspected by macrovision.They have told me thay know
every website that sells and advertises macro disable in the uk.Initially
they will warn the manufacturers,then if it does not stop take legal action.
If this does not work thay will target the dealers.They are allready
preparing legal action against a few far east companies.A few of them
have already been mentioned in this forum.And were not talking about
the sc-2000.

You can use ALL DOS compatible characters as part of the filename for the yelo 800, bar one.
The full-stop character is only allowed in folder names.

e.g. "01. Album Title (1971)" is OK.

but the MP3 names will only allow the full-stop character as the seperation between the filename and mp3 extension.
If you put a full-stop in the filename, that track will be invisible to the yelo.
Obviously the yelo checks for the dot to be followed by mp3 and includes it.

Infact ALL non mp3 files are invisible to the yelo. (That`s useful!!!)
BTW only the first 11 characters for folder/file name are shown.

I have also tried the !`(){}[]~;, characters and all are accepted!

s*** - there`s some BASS in that beast. Too much really!
Using the non-mixed mode outputs should be kinder as the woofer component will not then be present here (I think!).

Pity the picture aint up to much. ARTIFACTS? I nearly choked!
Everything else is GREAT!

Its silent, no sign of vacuum-cleaner type noises, and reads the discs quickly.
Also it has 8x (Not 4x as specified) forward/reverse search.
The specs in the manual say it can view all VCD varieties - 1.0/1.1/2.0/3.0 (Not just 2.0/3.0 as the advert states).
I dont know which one of the above is true.
My Non-Standard CDRs/CDRWs all play without any problems.

Anyone work out a way to start in the root and tell the yelo to recursively play all the MP3s. If its not possible, I think it`ll be better to put them all in the root.
Also the files are sorted in the order of the DOS 8.3 counterpart. (NOT The Joliet long filename). This is annoying as some of my CDs show
songs in an incorrect order as I saved them to hard disk out of sequence!

eg. 01,02,05,04,06,07,03 etc


Again, anyone here know how to correct this? Some software which sorts the files in "true" Joliet order before burning?
I`m using CDRWin which cant handle this.

If yelo had an excellent picture (it doesnt) this would be a great machine. Alas...

I`ve watched R2`s

"The World Is Not Enough"
"The Matrix"
"The Last Boy Scout".

They all show signs of artifacts throughout if you look at the motionless background (uhh - I mean it should be motionless!). The reviewees might call it grain - I call it artifacts! Not the huge blocky variety but shadowy gray/discoloured apparitions where there should be perfect stillness.

Even worse results were obtained from my NTSC regionless collection
comprising "Asian Island Wh*res" & "Samurai Debutants".
The pixelation, shimmering grey blotches, most noticable on skin tone. (Yeah lots of them in these type of films) almost spoilt my enjoyment.
I think PowerDVD and my PC handle these better!!!
Perhaps it may not be as bad as the SCAN (I havent seen one of these btw) but I do expect it to keep up with the encore or match digital satellite receivers. AM I ASKING TOO MUCH?

If matsui/bush can manage excellent video why cant a much more expensive yelo?
I`m also watching the yelo through an old 18inch 4:3 without the `blue beam` working and on composite! I dread to think how much worse it would look with a decent set-up!

Apart from that (serious though it is), I`m delighted with the rest of the package (I`d have to be - or it would be `return to sender` immediately).
If the mpeg decoder is a card like in the scan, perhaps I might get an improved version.

The MP3 is great and no other problems. Just the F***ING picture.

I may be being a touch too critical, but I`d hoped for perfection.
I should have stayed with Azuda/Mico perhaps and save some dosh!

Any suggestions? I have one for you involving a What DVD Magazine and a south facing orifice (LOL).

Most porn is written on single sided/single layer DVD`s so the Bitrate(quality) will be poor no matter what.

Secondly composite bleed`s like a tarrantino movie (not good for matrix).

New TV`s have superior tubes many aimed for DVD playback and therfore suffer less tizzing.

You may have a faulty mpeg card.

Carrot, how does your Yelo fair with some of the issues I have raised? In particular random one second pauses in playback and the unit running quite warm.

If your not getting either of these then mine is going back.
