Page 1 of How do you choose your speaker cable?

I have Yam receiver and 5 Mission Speakers.

I need some speaker cable to connnect them all.

The only thing to go off seems to be price per mtre, i.e £1mtr- £2mtr etc etc

I dont really want to spend a lot if i can help it as my rears a miles away so will cost me a fortune.

Is speaker cable all the same so basically just choose what you can afford? or should you try and get a certain brand like you would with scarts etc i.e. ixos etc. ??

any advice much appreciated

Go for qed original speaker cable,available for around £2.50 per metre and will suit your mission and Yammy kit to a tee.Plus its not too thick-so it can be run under the carpet easily.
Speaker cable all depends on the shielding and the copper used in the actual cable itself. The plastic covering the cable should be durable enough to prevent any unwanted interference getting into the signal.

Dont just go for the cheapest bell wire you can get your hands on-it`ll make your system sound pants at best!

IXOS 607 is ideal for rears, as well as being inexpensive - it`s very flat and also self adhesive, so it can crawl up walls very discreetly.

Errm, Westy, the insulation used has absolutely nothing to do with interference reduction. Also speaker cables are not shielded. It would take quite a hefty electromagnetic field to audibly affect speakers. The impedance of most amplifier speaker outputs is less than 0.1 ohm, and most speakers are 8-ish ohms nominally (i.e. a damping factor of 80). If you ran a mains cable running an electric fire all the way along a speaker cable, you`d probably get an inductive pickup of a couple of mV - equivalent to about 40 microW damped by the amplifier across 8 ohm

Line signals are another matter - for these you do need shielding and if they must cross mains (or speaker) cables, they should cross at right angles and if possible separated by a few inches.

Westy - thanks for the qed tip i have just looked this up on the qed website and will now try and find an online supplier for this.

Neon - thanks for the detailed information. you mention ixos 607 for the rears, do you also recommend this for the centre and fronts?.

I guess I will go for which ever is the cheapest of the above 2 online unless anyone knows of anything else?.

IXOS 607 for the centre possibly. For the mains something a little beefier - QED original, or better QED silver anniversary. If you can biwire, QED silver anniversary bi is a good buy ... or bi ;)

Moving up the price ladder now though!

There are dozens of speaker cables you could go for. QED and IXOS are two brands of many - but they are ideal for starting out on the rocky road to financial ruin!

Most of the reviews and comments i have read have dismissed bi-wire.

No doubt it is slightly better, but I strongly suspect my "amateur ears" are not going to notice any difference, if i spent the extra money on this.

I have therefore decided to go for the QED original (£2per mtr) for all round, presumably this is ok for all the speakers i.e. centre, rear and fronts?, it isnt specifically just designed for the fronts?

It is allways best to sick with the same cable all round for tonal balance.

As for bi-wiring I am a fan and do belive it makes a differance but that is a personal thing and you can allways add a second run of QED original at a later date.
